This is the saddest news I have heard in a very long time, he was my inspiration as a kid and am deeply upset about the news....

I hope even more they have decided to drop the ideas going around of them remaking Drop Dead Fred with Russell Brand now.

Not only an incredibly funny man but also generally a fantastic actor and if anyone can find it I highly recommend his autobiography and the Rik Mayall presents episodes ( in fact I'm gonna YouTube that now )

Oh and true story, one year, 98 I think, I got Hooligans Island on VHS for Christmas. Myself, my sister, and my Brother watched it, and my brother laughed so much he literally vomited on himself. Myself and my sister then proceeded to laugh so hard we couldn't speak for the entirety of Christmas day

As the years have passed, I've noticed how Mayall did a brilliant job of taking the absolute p*ss out of precisely the kind of irritating right-on left wing, Militant-reading 'students' his character in TYO's portrayed. Mayall was just six years older than me; I knew many of the 'types' his character was a caricature of in real life. At that time (the early 80s) I was actually fairly left wing myself and I wouldn't have seen the extent of the biting satire in Mayall's performance; now I can really appreciate just how far ahead of his time he was - and he was spot-on, expertly nailing the nascent fascism of the hard left, as well it's complete inability to take criticism. The man was hugely talented, very funny and he will be missed. I couldn't care less about his personal politics; whatever they were, to his eternal credit he wasn't above ripping the absolute sh*t out of them.

RIP, Rik. Flasheart forever. :(

We hear an awful lot of leftie whingeing about NHS waiting lists. Well the answer's simple. Shut down the health service. Result? No more waiting lists. You see, in the good old days, you were poor, you got ill and you died. And yet these days people seem to think they've got some sort of God-given right to be cured. And what is the result of this sloppy socialist thinking? More poor people. In contrast, my policies would eradicate poor people, thereby eliminating poverty. And they say that we Conservatives have no heart.

What an utter moron. It was just for fun, not something you need to agree or disagree with. I think people try and take too much away from these programmes.

A Hammersmith Broadway resident has paid tribute to late comedic actor Rik Mayall with a makeshift blue plaque commemorating the time he 'punched his friend in the balls on a bench near this spot'.

The iconic signs are usually of the 'lived here', 'was inaugurated here' or 'convalesced here' variety, but Mayall's unofficial one focuses instead on a slapstick moment I'm sure he would be immensely proud of.

The actor was famous for his mock misanthropy, as shown in an infamous letter he once wrote in reply to a fan asking for his autograph.

He was similarly surly in his first and last tweet, which read: "Opening my very own Twitter to stop another bastard from doing it. So f**k off & don't expect to hear from me any time soon. Love Rik x".

Mayall died at the age of 56 yesterday morning, his agent confirmed, with the cause of death yet to be determined.

"We don't know yet what happened. He had a strong heart, so I don't think it was a heart attack," his wife said outside the couple's home yesterday. "But we just don't know until the coroner's report.

"Maybe he had a fit, maybe it was his heart. We just don't know."

Mayall was left seriously ill after a quad bike accident in 1998 which left him in a coma for several days, but was working until recently.

His reading of George's Marvellous Medicine from Jackanory:

It's up there with The Young Ones as a childhood memory highlight for me. Just perfect.

Its funny, whenever I read that story to the kids I always use that Rik Mayall voice for his grandmother. Amazing how these things lodge in your memory.
