The Shard is the only decent looking tall building in London.

What? London has a few iconic tall buildings.

Also London has some of the most restricted building regulations in the world with whole sections off limits to skyscrapers so they don't spoil the sight lines of famous buildings.

That's pretty near my Uni. Wasn't it voted ugliest new building in London recently?

To answer my own question - yes. Yes it was.

You must be joking, Strata looks amazing. It's the placement of it that gets me...there's nothing close to is except some dodgy council blocks and the Imperial War Museum.

You call this an architecture thread? Architecture is so much more than just glass skyscrapers. :|

That's terrible. And who exactly sees a Gherkin and thinks "My, what a glamorous vegetable. In fact, I'm suddenly inspired to design a building around one."

And as that Walkie-Talkie thing has proven, London is not a good place for architecture.

Just look at it, it's revolting.

Erm, you do realise the Gherkin is one of the most well liked buildings in London and while the Walkie Talkie may not be your cup of tea I like it.

It's such a stupid name for a stupid looking building, though.

Hence, my initial point about the Shard being the best building in London still stands 8-)

I agree but Elephant and Castle need renovation and Strata is a good start. It looks best from a distance as the three wind-turbines make for a really iconic silhouette.

Gherkin looks pretty crap.

To be fair there aren't very many tall buildings in London.

Guys Hospital is going to have an exterior refurb so that it doesn't spoil it for the Shard apparently. It'd strawberry floating better do. Just look at it:

Have you actually been there, in the bright light of day without all the neon lights? It really is a concrete jungle.

Building on the left looks like the architect decided to base its profile on a pipe wrench.
