Too right. Lovely post, fella.

Can next year possibly top it?

(Answer: depends on whether Ueda-san pulls his finger out.)

I'd say no. But then, I would have said that this time last year!

The problem I have is that now I have seen the sheer, beautific quality of Dead Space, all other titles seem somehow diminished. I fired up a bit of Fallout3 and even though I could see there is clearly far more actual gameplay than DS could ever summon from it's simplistic FPS bones, visually it looks like a turd next to EA Redwood Shore's graphical extravaganza. This, for me, becomes a big problem - and a huge hurdle all subsequent games must successfully jump to win my favour. I just feel that in DS I'm witnessing the visual quality bar being raised significantly higher in every way.

Thank God I've never been able to play the likes of Crysis on a maxxed out killer PC. I'm not sure I'd ever quite recover. 8-)

Indeed. I've got a funny feeling in my waters that Nintendo will pull out an unexpected all-time classic next year at some point, too. Might be wishful thinking, but stranger things have happened.

Also, Fable II DLC please, Lionhead. And lots of it. Ta.

Fable 2 for me but Gears 2 or Left 4 Dead might grab my top spot before the end of the year.

Fable 2. But I haven't played many games this year.

Surprised to see AW:DC so high. I didn't enjoy it as much as the first DS installment. I haven't got very far - too much prattling on. Maybe if I skip all the dialogue it'll be more fun.

Oop yeah, FIFA too. I tend to forget sports games but FIFA is undoubtedly one of my favourite games of the year.

Every time I've seen another game mentioned in this thread I've died a little inside.

Lost Odessey.

Yes I know its an RPG, but its a strawberry floating immense one, with a lovely story and some beautiful moments, Ive never used the word beauty and game in the same sentance properly before but it is.

I know it wont win, but it made my year a little brighter.

Fabian Delph is a banana split.

With the Little Big Planet level creator. Did you now know that it comes with a level creator, Kev? :P

It only had 10 decent bits, padded out with dull jobs and terrible biking.

No More Heroes comes into its own when you have the best beam katana all kitted out, all your skills maxed out at the gym, and all the balls from around Santa Destroy. Such a feeling of power! :D

I liked the jobs, they gave the gameplay that extra bit of variety.

What I liked most about NMH was the little stylish touches that largely go unnoticed. For example when you start a new game, you control Travis for about 5 seconds and then the introduction cutscene begins. That tiny section where the player has control really didn't need to be in there (the game could have directly started from the cutscene), but its little touches like this that makes the game stand out. Notice that Travis whistles the NMH theme as he mounts his bike at the start, or the inclusion of the real ending, the inventive control scheme. Even the load screens when Travis enters a building are pretty badass, with the graffiti-style image and weird angles accompanied by the sound of the guitar chord.

Suda and the guys at Grasshopper could have taken a shortcut and left out these minor additions, and yet they went the extra length to fit it all in. The guys know style and their audience, I love how the game breaks the fourth wall, including references that only the hardcore will understand, it really is a gamer's game.

Undoubtably the game had its flaws, but when you appreciate all the little things it comes together for a unique experience. There's no other game like it.

NMH never really clicked with me, to be honest. I just feel that if it had been on any other console it would have been dismissed as being average, at best.

I can understand where you're coming from, because I kinda felt the same initially. (I remember thinking "How did this get a 9 from EDGE!" ).

It was only towards the very end of the game/after completing the game that it finally occured to me how much I had actually enjoyed the game!

Weirdly the same thing happened with SMG, towards the start I found the game to be a disappointment in comparison to SM64. But as I progressed I enjoyed it more, it took me a while to notice how much fun I was actually having with the game!
