The Sega Mega Drive is a 16-bit video game console released by Sega in Japan in 1988, North America in 1989, and the PAL region in 1990. It was sold under the name Sega Genesis in North America as Sega was unable to secure legal rights to the Mega Drive name in that region. The Mega Drive was Sega's fifth home console and the successor to the Sega Master System.

The Mega Drive is part of the fourth generation era of consoles, and the first of its generation to achieve notable market share in Europe and North America. It was a direct competitor of the TurboGrafx-16 (which was released one year earlier) and the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (which was released two years later). The Sega Mega Drive began production in Japan in 1988 and ended with the last new game being released in 2002 in Brazil.

With a lifespan of fourteen years and 29 million units sold, it became Sega's most successful console. The console has a legacy with certain games available on the console being offered as downloads to be played on newer consoles, fan translations and indie game development.

'Mazing game, spawned a pretty damn good animated show, too. Just a shame about the one on the N64.

Anyone remember Virtua Racing, the game cost £60-70 because it has some SVP chip in it (SEGA's version of the Super FX)

The first console I ever owned. Ah, memories...

I loved the likes of Sonic, Golden Axe and Streets of Rage, but my favourite game for the Mega Drive was probably Prince of Persia. Maybe because it was the first game I ever remember playing. :D

The Megadrive is my favourite console of all time. I'd be hard pressed to choose one favourite game though... I'll probably go with Outrun...or Streets of Rage 2...or Kid Chameleon...or Golden Axe...or Ecco the Dolphin...or...well, you get the picture!

Just got one of these from Play Asia the other week.

http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-13-71-6z- ... -2sf4.html

Tiny Megadrive with 20 built in games for about £28 quid. Can't feel cheated.

Its worth it for Mean Bean Machine alone.

My first proper videogames console, i remember owning fifa, which i absolutely loved in its dodgy isometric view.

I fondly remember scoring loads of goals from the corner kick area and headers!

Certainly fun times and i was a fanboy of sonic in the sonic vs mario wars we had in school, i do wish that i had the snes though, some of the games i experienced for it afterwards on the gameboy advance and the virtual console show me it really was a quality machine.

I bought mine on 23/03/91. Remember this vividly as I went to a gig at the NEC that night. Megadeth, The Almighty & Alice in Chains.

I never had one but I do have fond memories of playing one at a cousin's. We would play Sonic 2, Streets of Rage 2 (I think it was the second one), Street Fighter, James Pond, and maybe one or two others but I don't really remember.

I've been able to play one or two since they've been re-released on XBLA and it was great playing through them again, and also being able to complete them. I still suck at Street Fighter, though!

My first proper console this, remember the good old days of Fifa 95 and Sonic, but did not get into gaming properly until the Sega Saturn came out. The 3D era was what got me interested.

I always used to just play Mortal Kombat 2, was probably what I had the system for.

Always preferred the SNES version though, less gore but better music.

Mega Drive

SNES and Arcade
