the PCI-e bus is usually near saturated with a graphics card or two. I certainly wouldn't want to be giving up PCI lines to duplicate functionality that your board already includes.

First step, make sure everything is seated right. Make sure the power is all plugged in right etc. Make sure the board isnt shorting.

Thanks mate.

Ive had it happen before where pushing the ram in firmly pops something else out. You just dont realise until it ceases to function.

Looks like it'd work, but a few concerns.

I wouldnt run the SSD and HDD through that. I understand that the performance would be affected for starters, but also I dont think it'd just 'work' as they do straight onto the mobo. You generally have to use extra software to configure cards like this and Im not sure it would support a boot drive. Finally, wouldnt it block one of the fans on the graphics card?

Would the SSD through a SATAIII port on a PCI card be slower than just using SATAII on the motherboard?

This whole extra software thing sounds like a pain too, and if it can't support a boot drive, then it's seriously lacking a basic feature.

It would have about an inch or more of space between one GPU fan so it would block some airflow for sure, however my friend's set up is fine with the top ASUS fatty being blocked by the bottom ASUS fatty:

So if that works for him then a shorter, further apart PCI card ought to be fine.

I will never go down the 2 graphics card route. I can't think of anything else I might wish to use PCI/PCI-e slots for in the future either, where as I do need more storage space, and unless I just get a new Nvidia card in the summer which is slimmer than the ASUS fatty (sold to fund purchase of said Nvidia card of course), freeing up two more SATAII ports and maybe even the SATAIII ports then besides ghetto cable solution I can't think of other options I have?

Surely a new case isn't going to magically add any clearance between the graphics card and the motherboard?

Yeah, the case isn't the issue, it's the size of the graphics card and the location of the 4 blocked SATA ports to blame.

A new case would just be a nice luxury to have after realising what a noob error it was actively trying to go for a smaller case, trying to build in it was cramped, way too many cables on view being unused because it's a non-modular PSU and the HDD side mount design would be nice too.

Are you absolutely positive a right angled sata plug won't work, I use one for my computer.

Perhaps a flexible PCI Express extension could help you move your card up/down a slot leaving you space to use the SATA3 ports?

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B003ASL ... mdp_mobile

SATA3 on a PCI card is still going to be slower than the Intel SATA3 ports on your motherboard. And due to performance issues it's not even worth considering one unless you need to add more storage drives.

Ooh, a flexible PCI-e riser. Nice idea. I've only ever seen the right angled dealies intended for use in slimline media style cases.

I tried it after getting the SSD, it almost fits, but despite applying quite a lot of pressure, the card wouldn't fit into the PCIe slot with a SATA right angled cable connected in any of the first 4 SATA ports.

I suppose I could try again but it seems very risky and unlikely given how much effort I tried with the previous attempt.

Question: do processors usually come with coolers or will I have to buy one separately?

They usually come with coolers if you get the retail package.

That's why the box is fairly big - most of it is the fan, the CPU is in a tiny bit at the top.
