Bought this from Asda today. I've never really given MGS games much of a chance before, and I'm hoping to remedy that.

I've always thought 2 and 3 were really bad for the cutscene to gameplay ratio, I don't think I minded with 3 though.

I haven't played 4 yet, is it worse than the others?

I don't mind the cutscene business with MGS. If every game had them like this, it would be terrible, but I'm happy for the one series to do it. And the game bits in between are hardly lacking, so I'll let them off.

But yes, as someone pointed out, in MGS4 there's one bit just over halfway where you'll need about 45 minutes to spare. And at the point where you finish the game (there's one battle where it'll be fairly obvious that it's the culmination of everything), put aside another hour and 20 minutes. I finished MGS4 (i.e. reached the start of the cutscene) at 1am... on a worknight. Ooops.

It really is. I'm going through the HD collection here, but I can feel an MGS4 playthrough simultaneously going down.

I've started 3 and will follow with Peace Walker, MGS2 and finally 4. And right now I'm watching Guyver Dark Hero

In any modern game there's no excuse not to have pausable cutscenes now. Especially with the length they're starting to reach.

Lucky then, bar Peace Maker, these aren't modern games.

The HD Collection however, is.

Can you not pause them by pressing the home button?

Not on Xbox, dunno about PS3.

I might be being a bit dense, but so far in MGS3 I have been unable to fathom how to grab an enemy from behind. I creep up behind them using the d-pad but doesn't matter what button I press or what I'm holding (if anything at all) I just can't do the CQC thing.

What am I missing?

Press and hold O on PS3 and I'm guessing it's the B button for Xbox.

Got this yesterday, started MGS2 today, so much nostalgia.

I can't believe how vividly I remember so much of a 10 year old game. Although I suppose I must have played through it a good 3 or 4 times since then.

Happened to me with MGS2 first time I played through it. I believe it's the cutscene before the final boss battle. I was ready to turn off and go to bed as I had to be up six hours later. Colour me annoyed when the cutscene was a good 45-50 minutes long. :fp:

MGS4 was ridiculous at the end. I remember playing it on my mum n dads TV at the time cos I only had my SD set and like hell I was playing MGS on that. Sunday afternoon I finish it and tell my mum it'll probably be a long one but she can have her TV back soon. :shifty: She wasn't too pleased when I sat and watched what was essentially a very dialogue heavy movie.

Just finished mgs3. It's easily my favourite although I haven't played mgs for years!

The ending is epic and genuinely emotional!

Quick question, for peace walker trophy do boss kills count? I tranq beat all bosses except the fear and volgin riding shagohad, I got 2 deaths but don't know if I killed early game and used continue or if the bosses are where my count comes from.

Starting peace walker now, I loved this on psp but seeing it on console it's clearly a portable game, slightly dumbed down but great none the less. I enjoyed the story and the dual stick aiming means this will be much easier now!

I'm holding off on playing mgs2, it was always my least fav and I really don't like Raiden. The limited camera controls will frustrate me too I just know it! Although it's been ages since I played so I'm looking forward to story again because I've forgotten most of it!

I've only ever played the original MGS, the original version, and I thought it was pretty sucky and had a nonscensical story, but I suppose at the time it would have been pretty awesome given what had come before. Hopefully, the more up to date games will show what the series is actually capable of once I get around to them.

If all else fails, skip the cutscenes and enjoy the gameplay.

Peace walker is quality, love the way you can drop in and out for a quick mission. That's what I loved about the psp version.

Art style has suffered a bit with the upscale though, still looks good.

Plus you get to play as Big Boss
