I enjoyed the non-Sweeney parts of the episode. The idea of Hammond sat in a shop eating his £5.99 Sunday dinner made me laugh.

The Sweeney parts were utterly dreadful though. Why do Hammond and Clarkson think they are actors?

I thought the last night's episode was gooseberry fool and it was a little boring.

Richard Hammond is getting worse and James May is getting better, methinks. :fp:

I agree that it was the worst top gear in a long time. The Sweeney section was pointless filler and not very funny either. There was a time when I loved their zany antics but now I prefer the actual car segments.

They haven't done any decent challenges for a while either. 3 second hand cars of a certain category etc

I'm also a little tired of the constant super car segments, I like when they focus on more realistic cars or popular cars that the average viewer may want or afford. I like when they ad lib about cars and argue over opinions etc, it feels more natural than the heavily scripted sit com elements.

The frustrating thing about the show at the moment is that there are still lots of really good things about it. The potential is still there but they seem to have lost their way.

I quite liked James' segment at the start on reviewing the two hatchbacks. It was nice to see the show actually looking at cars that the people watching the show would actually buy, rather than another set of supercars that look very similar and all have numbers attached to them so much bigger than any car we'd ever drive that it's basically nonsense.

Then after that segment Clarkson tells him it was boring and they'd go back to doing supercars all the time again.

One of the script writers on the show had this to say about last night's episode on Twitter:

Quote:
Don't blame me for the Sweeney film. I was out-voted on that one.

I shouldn't say in public what I thought of that item. But it would involve the F word and the S word. And maybe the W word.

So anyway, tonight's Top Gear. Sorry about that.

It was SHITE. Bog awful main film. Terrific guest though. Class act there.

Ah, there's the problem - you now assume everything is set up. Italian breakdown people not 'cod' at all. No staging whatsoever.

Yeah I believe there was no staging on the writers' part in the Italian breakdown workers segment. However Hammond is so used to acting as an exaggerated character that he was doing it then and made it look pretty staged.

I've always wondered this. Just looked it up and it's to do with the refresh rate of the LED lights being picked up by the camera.
