Psychonauts 2 is one step closer to becoming a reality after Minecraft creator Markus “Notch” Persson tweeted Double Fine studio's Tim Schafer to say he's genuinely keen on putting up his own money to get the sequel off the ground.

Earlier this month, Tim Schafer told Digital Spy he's been interested in developing a sequel to Psychonauts for some time, but has had no luck finding the financial backing, noting, “I’ve actually pitched that to publishers several times and no-one has taken the bait so far… I’d have to convince someone to just give me a few million dollars. That’s all.”

As it turns out, a millionaire was listen. In a recent tweet spotted by Eurogamer , Notch responded to Schafer directly, stating, “Let's make Psychonauts 2 happen.”

Notch later confirmed his intentions to Rock, Paper, Shotgun, and his Twitter feed has since been updated with numerous messages indicating he and Schafer are in talks and plan to discuss things further at this year's Game Developers Conference.

For his part, Schafer told Kotaku the partnership could happen, noting, “I have found funding on Twitter before.”

This is in reference to Double Fine's previous partnership with investor Steven Dengler, who helped the studio bring Costume Quest to PC and Psychonauts to Mac. Interestingly enough, Dengler has also inserted himself into the conversation, asking Notch and Schafer to “move this discussion offline.”

Psychonauts 2 has been on Schafer's radar. Now that he's got the stated support of an “indie” millionaire, maybe there's hope for Raz and the Whispering Rock campers yet.

Some great news I loved the original, and was always dissapointed they didn't get to makea sequal.

Come here Mr. Bun! :x

I had completely forgotten about that, or more likely repressed that memory.

A grown up Raz going to some location as an agent on an investigation would be awesome. If they included more puzzle elements it would be a lot better than the first game.

Please happen  How did the first game do sales-wise? I know it was originally a flop but it seems to have quite a wide-reaching cult appeal. Funding a poorly selling sequel could be the worst decision Notch has ever made but hopefully not.

Psychonauts did not do badly considering it had zero marketing on release and was sent out to die.

As you observe, it's developed a bit of a cult following in the years following it's release. It's an established IP now, so really, a well managed sequel should be reasonably profitable.

The problem is it may not make enough profit to be worth most megapublishers time.

This will never happen. The first game cost $15m, and even if a sequel cost a similar amount, it probably wouldn't break even.

I imagine a sizeable amount of that was just decent voice actors.

Notch 'can do' $13 million Psychonauts 2 budget

Quote:
Minecraft creator Markus 'Notch' Persson has said he could stump up the $13 million budget Double Fine Productions founder Tim Schafer thinks is necessary to fund Psychonauts 2.

Talks between the two parties over the potential game largely remain private - Notch apparently apologised to Schafer for making public comments on the situation that subsequently blew up on the internet - but the Double Fine man did tell Kotaku how he responded to Notch's offer.

"I was like, 'I don't think you can make [it] for a million dollars.' The original game was, I think, $13 million, I think you have to match the original game. As soon as I mentioned the amount of money he said, 'Yeah, I can do that.'"

Schafer added of Notch and Minecraft: "He's been pretty successful. And, when you look into it, it's a really inspiring story. He's just a regular guy. He didn't do anything sleazy to get it. He just made it himself, distributed it himself, it's a great story. I think we have a lot to learn from him, so I'd like to do something with him.

"And I'd like to make Psychonauts 2."

You can't just match the original budget, making games is much more expensive now due to rising costs and inflation. Psychonauts 2 is going to be more expensive to make if it ever is made.

Maybe they'll be a lot more efficient this time (hoping).

Given that the original still stands up reasonably well visually, the cost needn't be "all that". Though I have a feeling the lion's share of the cost for the last one was probably the voice talent: Those guys really knocked it out of the park.

I'd love to see this game made. I never finished the original, because I have no time / videogame adhd, but games like Sam and max that are genuinely funny light hearted fun occasionally grab my attention back. reminds me of rare and nintendo when I was a kid but actually with characters deep and complex enough to hold my attention for more than 5 seconds.
