The feature in this months GamesTM has put me right off it. It seems they upped the action ante after player feedback.
Which douchebag 'players' are these?

I enjoyed the action but AW for me was all about the atmosphere, setting and bonkers story. Dont know anyone who loved it solely for its combat.

IGN review:-

85% from Official Xbox Mag:-

Quote:
Having this much Taken-slaughtering glee in such a small, concise package makes Alan Wake's American Nightmare an instant "yes, please" for series fans. But what's more surprising is that its accessible approach to combat makes it an equally worthwhile experience for those who've never suspended their disbelief to wander Wake's dream-like world.

86% from Pelit (Finland)

Quote:
Interesting and understandable plot, less running in a dark forest but more action. New Alan shows how XBLA games should be done.

This man! they are chatting gooseberry fool. If this proves to be a big success and they take the franchise down that route I'm gonna bail.

No purchase for me then.

And I loved the original and all the DLC.

Nearly bought the first game today. I opted for resident evil 5 at the same price even though I've previously finished it.

Only £6 as well, think I'll get it tomorrow.

I've picked this up cheap and I'm about to start it. Is it worth getting the dlc first, or just play 'as is', and look out for a live offer once I've finished it?

I'd just wait for an offer on it. It's not the kind of game you'll blitz through in one sitting, so the chances are by the time you want to play the DLC, it'll be cheap somewhere.

There's not much variation in the environments, so most people get a bit fed up after a chapter or two. It's short enough that you could technically do it in one sitting (it's about 6 hours long if you're rushing it), but you're not going to get much enjoyment out of it playing it like that. If anything, you'll just be playing through it to get it over with.

You are talking about the original Alan Wake? Pretty sure its quite a bit longer than 6 hours.

I dunno, if you're rushing it a chapter an hour seems about right. Obviously if you're exploring for tea flasks and manuscript pages it'll be closer to 10 (and longer if you factor in the nightmare playthrough for the extra pages)

Also, IGN seem to agree:
Quote:
The story mode is a tad shorter than the original Alan Wake, but not by very much. If Alan Wake took you around six or seven hours, expect to spend about four or five in American Nightmare.

I'm looking forward to it, I certainly won't be rushing. I picked it up on the strength of opinion on here, it's a game that sort of passed me by. I'm looking forward to it.

I have this, mgs3 (from the hd collection) and metro still untouched. I've got some work ahead of me with ME3 coming up.

I can do Alan Wake in one sitting.

I was sitting for about 11 hours, mind. My arse was numb as a bugger afterwards.

I picked up the new Collector's Edition PC version of the original game off Steam this morning (£22.99).

Includes developer commentaries and videos, illustrated PDF book, soundtrack album and two special episodes ('The Signal' and 'The Writer').

Very nice package and the game really does look gorgeous on PC, running everything max. Looks like Remedy might just have produced the definitive version of the first game. Game has been optimized for quad core support. 360 controller support is natively supported for those (like me) who prefer it over keyboard and mouse.
