Had another go at a mushroom risotto the other night - greater variety of mushrooms, more concetrated stock, and plenty of garlic gave it more flavour than last time. Win.

Finally managed to find some Miso soup, after trying several supermarkets. Waitrose saved the day. It recommends 200ml of water per sachet though - not really enough to make a soup, surely. I could use more sachets and water obviously, but you only get 4 sachets for £2.35.

I'm glad a Waitrose has opened up in Chippenham. I was looking for bean sprouts for my chow mein the other day and Tesco didn't have any, so it was Waitrose to the rescue. Also the only place in town to stock filo pastry.

Cooked tempura prawns and chicken (I'm calling it cluck and suck) with a chicken stir fry for Valentine's last night. I got the tempura recipe from here - http://www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/tempu ... ndch_93059

The batter was a little bit heavier than I wanted so I should've added more fizzy water. It tasted really good though (apart from the dipping sauce, that was a disaster :fp: )

Jamie Oliver makes a good suggestion with regards risotto. When the thing has finished cooking, turn off the heat, lob in a knob of butter and stick the lid on the saucepan and let it rest for a couple of minutes.

Belated roast dinner day tonight. Chicken from Waitrose since it's the nicest we've had so far, and some chocolate melt in the middle cakes for pudding.

Finally decided on my valentines menu next week.

Starters: Moules Mariniere with cream, garlic and parsley
Main: Sea Bass with wilted spinach and mushrooms
Dessert: New York Cheesecake

I can make the cheesecake the day before and the others are pretty quick to do as long as I prep first

No cheese and supermarket brand ketchup

7/10

EDIT: perhaps i see cheese, 8/10 ;)

In all seriousness, putting the effort in with burgers at home makes so much difference!

Tried a new recipe last night - wasn't a Valentine's jobby or anything - but it didn't go down especially well.

Sautéed pork fillet in a very sticky honey, lemon and pine nut dressing, on pasta. Bit dry, too sweet, not enough sauce. I won't be hurrying back.

Rubix - that meal looks grand. I don't do shrooms, but the seabass looks wicked.

Oh man, my meal yesterday was sooooooooooo good. Probably one of the nicest meals I've made. Never had braised duck before but it was so good, with a lovely syrupy sauce drizzled all over it. I could have eaten the whole duck to myself.

The sweet potato pancakes were really nice too with a caramel, coconut and kaffir lime sauce on top.

If anyone is interested I'll plop the recipe up.

As for picture I think I will start posting pics too. Good plan.

Also fair play for doing all that stuff for your Valentines meal. Looked great and looks like you went to a lot of effort. This is why when I was talking to my cousin, and she said she would be dissapointed if her Valentine didn't take her out and just cooked her dinner, really bugged me.

Remebered I made an album for the food I ate whislt away, so thought I'd shove that in here too.

Sandycoin - how did you do the duck? I keep overlooking it in the supermarket as I don't want to get it wrong. I'm guessing very fast/hot to start then nice and slow, but would be nice to have a second opinion.

I'm considering doing some duck as part of a cassoulet in a slow cooker, though the Mrs doesn't eat a lot of meat so I'd need to bulk it up with a lot of beans and veg, I think.

I jointed the whole duck to begin with and scored the skin. Then in a big casserole dish over a mdeium heat hob browned skin side down first for 5 mins or so, then turned over to start to brown the skinless side. I had to do in batches though for this part. Then kept the pieces warm in foil. Removed some of the fat, but enough to lightly brown some onions and other stuff. Added the sauce, then the duck pieces and mixed it all up, then poured in about 2 litres of chicken stock, then left on a very low setting to braise for a good couple of hours until the duck could be pulled from the bone easily.
