I moved house about a month ago and have bought a powered/ amplified indoor aerial. This one:
http://www.argos.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=10001&catalogId=1500002951&langId=-1&productId=1501190125The reviews aren't amazing but two of my friends have one and said it was good. Plus, it's smaller than other amplified aerials and looks nice.
I got mine back home and managed to get most channels but it was pretty temperamental, before, about a week ago, the aerial broke.

My question is - how can you tell if you can actually get good (digital, of course) TV signal in any given house/ room? When the aerial worked I had it up on the window sill facing outwards. The Sky dish and existing roof aerial both face that direction.
Is it case of trial and error or is their a tried and tested method?
