So, thought I'd test out my repair skills by replacing the battery on a Ipod Touch 3g. Complete and utter nightmare really, but after breaking the digitiser and the LCD on the way have managed to now solder the new battery in and it's good to go (seriously, having to solder the battery in? Ridiculous).

But now before i get everything else back in, the screen just goes white when I press a button then disappears after 5 seconds or so. All the ribbons are connected, just not all clipped back into place. So, just wondering (long shot really) if anyone knows if the LCD will operates as normal without the touch screen all clipped in place or if everything has to be all back in place before the display will work correctly? Last thing I want to do is get it all back together again to find there's something not right.

I realise I could take my query to an ipod forum, which I will probably end up doing anyway. But it's a Jungle out there, a big geeky Jungle.

Ta!

First of all double check your soldering and make sure you haven't created a short circuit anywhere.

If everything is back in place then fully reassemble it before testing it.

I admire your tenacity in giving repairs a go but in the case of apple products its often worth just buying a 2nd hand replacement for £50 from cash generator et al.

Yeah, I'm starting to think I've crossed/short cicuited the soldering on the battery as now I'm getting the battery charging screen pop up when plugged into a pc.

I've done soldering before on pcb's as I'm a gas engineer, but the minute amount of solder required is that of a machine really, or at least a very high quality soldering iron.

I'm going to un-sweat the battery and try to re-seat it and go from there. I've got all the right components now, just need to get them altogether!

I will not be doing this again and would not have started if I knew how tough it was. I'm reasonably competent, but it's the job of a specialist really. It's ridiculous the amount of work required to change the battery and makes me despise Apple even more, just a shame the touch is such a great piece of kit.

Appreciate the reply. :)

What alternatives are there though? The Zune HD isn't made anymore. If you want to buy a non-phone media player you have to go to Apple.

Or there's the Samsung Galaxy media player.
