I'm thinking in future of making one or two websites. My question is, is it better to have a .com or a .co.uk address? Is there any real difference?

I'm asking because I read someone from the UK could be extradited to the US because he owned a .com website that did illegal type things... at least I think I heard that.

The sites wouldn't be selling anything, well one might later - but I'd like people outside the UK to be able to see it ok.

I'm sure I'll amuse some people with this question but... I've no idea.

buy both, have one redirect to the other.

if you're worried about extradition (in which case, wtf are you hosting) then realistically it's not going to make a difference either way, but use the .co.uk.

I'm not worried about it as much as I prefer the idea of being accountable to UK law. Not that anything should ever happen since they'd be information sites basically, but I'd just like to be aware.

:)

Now, off to make raperaperape.com

I own both a .com and a .co.uk domain name and in the future I would be very tempted to only buy .co.uk. It's worrying how little control you have over .com domains as a private individual, whereas every .co.uk domain name comes with a Nominet account which basically gives you full control even were the domain company you bought from to go rogue.* Nominet includes address hiding for non-business domains, too, so you don't have to pay extra for domain privacy services like you do with a .com.**

tl;dr ICANN is a piece of gooseberry fool whereas Nominet owns.

* i.e. GoDaddy is notorious for strawberry floating with people's .com domain names, but they wouldn't be able to touch a .co.uk.

** Interestingly, domain privacy services are against ICANN's guidelines, putting your .com domain name in even more danger of being strawberry floated around with - at the very least they mean that you can't even appeal to ICANN should something happen because you won't be registered as the owner, some dodgy domain privacy company will be.

Oh, and .co.uk's are cheaper to buy and keep than .com's.
