Actually, it depends on how the text is stored within the PDF. It is possible to create a largely text-based PDF that could be reflowed quite nicely.

Many documents however, do infact just contain bitmapped images of pages, which obviously suffer from all the benfits and flaws of bitmaps.

Nook Color. You can pick them up pretty cheaply on ebay, even cheaper if they are factory refurbished. You can put android on it and use a decent cheap tablet too.

I have a Sony PRS-300 and it's pretty great. I like how I can use it with my public library and that supporting epubs gives me a greater range of stores to choose from. Plus there's less hassle to removing adobe DRM than amazon DRM.
