Well I gave AVG 2012 the boot and installed Microsoft security essentials instead, it found a trojan (said it was a possible Hosts file hijacker which seems to meet the description of my problem) and removed it and now everything seems to be working fine. :D

Also got around to buying my new graphics card, instead of getting the 6790, I went for the 6850 as the difference in price was only $10 thanks to a mail in rebate. I got a Gigabyte, stock overclocked card...

I cannot believe how quiet it is, either that or my old card was defective from day one as it was always really loud when I was playing any game.

Make sure they're connected up right and if they go via the mobo headers then enable them in the BIOS.

Each fan has 2 red wires, and 2 black wires coming out of it, and i don't know if it is connected to the mobo.

And when I went into BIOS it said cha_fans NA.
It looked like they are supposed to be connected up to something, the wires of the two fans seem to go down behind the mobo. But I couldn't see where they went after that, I didn't know if it is a good idea to take the panal off that is behind the mobo, I thought things might be connceted to it or something.

Also, what I have been reading is that if there is one red and black wire, it means it goes to the PSU. But if there is also a yellow/white wire, it goes to the mobo. But each fan seems to have four wires, that are black and red. They are fans that you can switch to low or high speed though. I am going to assume they are connected to the PSU, but then surely at least ONE would go, pretty small chance of them both being buggered.
And if they were connected to the mobo, why wouldn't they show up on BIOS?

So you opened up the case? I hope there weren't any stickers on the case that you broke because if so you've probably voided your warranty.

I would recommend you just call up the people who you got the PC from and get them to fix it, you paid them more money then you would have if you built the machine yourself you might as well get them to deal with this problem.

If you want to deal with this though the wire coming off the case fan should connect to a spot on the motherboard that is labeled CHA Fan 1 (Chassis fan), if you can't see it find out what motherboard you have, either by looking at what is written on the motherboard itself or by looking at what the boot screen says when you first start up your computer, find the manual for it online, and then just look up where the connection is there.

Also, another probably stupid question, but having two accounts, does that slow anything down at all?

Not usually, not unless you're using both simultaneously (say, running torrent, and then "switching user" from the start menu, and leaving all your programs running in the background).

And even then, a multicore CPU like the i5 should more or less take it in stride.

Got mine ordered - cheers for the help falsey. Couldn't go with exactly the same spec as I needed to allow money for some software, operating system, a monitor, etc.

Roughly, though, it should fly (for what i need it for, at least):

Good Gigabyte motherboard, Terabyte hard drive, decent cooling, 8gb RAM @ 1600mhz and it's got an overclocked i5 2500k processor @ 4.3ghz.

If I'm shitting myself when it comes to building it, I'll be back here with all my problems (some of which may be PC related.)

I've only ever used my ancient laptop and my Office PC, which is so slow it's comical. I'm expecting to be astounded.

Just as well you made me think to check the fans, Falsey: CPU temp was way up around 64 degrees because of crud in the heatsink. Cleaned it out this morning and whacked in a 12cm exhaust fan while I was at it, and it's now hovering at a much more agreeable 32 degrees.

My computer is much more quiet and cooler with the fans plugged in as well.

How do you know so much Falsey? Do you work in a computer shop or something?

The system reserved is because I assume it has had windows on it at some point.

Just reformat the whole disk and create a single new partition.

That's what I want to do but where do I reformat the whole disk? They show up as two separate disks in My Computer :shifty:
