UK shop GAME appears to be in trouble after doubt was cast on its ability to buy new games.

Eurogamer has heard from multiple UK industry sources that the specialist video game retailer has lost credit insurance with a number of publishers.

This means that publishers are now forced to take the risk on games that do not sell - something they do not wish to do.

GAME is now being asked by publishers to pay for new stock up front with cash. If GAME doesn't have the cash, it could result in the shop being unable to stock new games.

This week sees the launch of Final Fantasy 13-2, SoulCalibur 5, NeverDead and Metal Gear Solid HD Collection. Eurogamer understands GAME will stock these games on Friday.

Eurogamer readers have reported that GAME is not selling Metal Gear Solid HD on its website, and that the shop has been turning away Mass Effect 3 pre-orders.

Metal Gear Solid HD Collection is currently not listed on GAME's website.

Sounds like that's it then. If they're not getting in ME3, arguably the biggest game of the year, they may as well wrap it up now.

Shame, I remember getting NES games from the store that's still open in my town. Apart from nostalgia though I wouldn't miss it.

Is this because the market has gone away for Game, or just in general?

Backlash from the "used" business?

They kept cancelling my pre-order for the Mass Effect 3 N7 edition a few weeks back, after the 3rd or 4th attempt it finally went through and hasn't been cancelled. Still down as pre-ordered on their site.

So that's why RE:Revelations was VERY low on stock online and in stores (apparently some stores got 2 copies). Also Final Fantasy XIII-2 preorders being taken down before release (which has never happened).

If you can't stock what consumers want..that is it! I'm afraid GAME have come to the end of the road..god knows how they are going to cope with the Vita launch then and I do hope everyone on here gets there games and consoles! I do feel sorry for the nice non-irritating workers..(few and far between in my local store).

This might explain the trouble they had with R.E: Revelations

I'd think Sony would cut them some slack for the Vita launch, having sent demo units to all GAME and Gamestation stores, Sony would know that they're likely to be the biggest place on the highstreet for them at launch.

This news really doesn't sound like it bodes well though.

I never got though why they have so many stores though, Nottingham for example has two GAME branded stores and a Gamestation - they really should just have one larger store with all the stock in IMO. I've seen other places too - Meadowhall for example has a GAME upstairs and another one a 2 minute walk away downstairs and then a Gamestation too. Can't be good business - maybe if they all stocked different stuff but they don't, it's the same in all of them pretty much.

If they closed the duplicate stores they could save a fortune - maybe even make GAME specialise in new stuff and Gamestation second hand and retro, at least then there'd be something to differentiate the two.

OK...seems like they are only doing new games by preorder allocations. Meaning..the quicker you preorder..the sooner you get your game..they won't have stock to just walk in and buy..your preorder is held as that until there able to send it (could be days or weeks after launch). I'm reading into the comments on that MGS HD collection page..think that's what's happening..could be wrong!

On a slightly related note, assuming they don't implode before the Vita launch does anyone know if it's possible to move an in-store preorder to another branch?

I preordered my Vita in their derby store as I figured I'd be at work and so it there's no midnight launch I could pick it up in my lunch hour but have now got launch day off work so would be easier to pick it up from the store 10 mins from my house instead of driving into Derby... has anyone ever managed to move a preorder in this way?

I'm guessing for games they wouldn't care as you've not paid anything, but as I've paid a £25 deposit for this they might get a bit snotty about it.

Looks like this already started last week. They didn't have Resident Evil: Revelations listed on there site until a day or two after launch day.

And not a single strawberry float was given that day. Terribly run company that could turn itself around very easily by not being an overly cynical money-grabber. Yet it chooses not to. So strawberry float it.
