Glad you like it. Which one was it? (assuming you're talking to me)

I need to get myself a faster lens for indoor photography. Had to shoot these at ISO1600 and slow shutter speeds, hence not that sharp.

There's a little bit about how I took them on my blog (link in sig) and a few more on my Flickr.

All shot on my 35mm f1.8, and it turns lens hoods are invaluable in rainy situations.

Nice firework shots.

I had avoided shooting with the built-in flash because I had been told to once, but sometime's it's the only way to get a passable shot even if it ruins the picture in some ways. So I've been practicing over the holidays and trying to figure out how to get the best results. I ended up settling on F8 most of the time and a fairly slow shutter speed (1/4 - 1/20). That way I get some of the ambient light in there and the flash doesn't totally dominate the picture.

You could try one of these:

Which is basically a rip off of one of these:

Trying out my new FD mount 50mm f1.8:

The lack of autofocus and IS was hard to get used to. I used the flash a lot, which helped with the lack of IS but there were so many pictures with poor focus. There were even a few where the nose was in focus but the rest of the face wasn't.

Check if your camera has a built in "rangefinder." It basically works on the basis that you pick the AF point, and something pops up in your viewfinder telling you when that point is in focus. Enormously useful when using MF lenses.

Not on the EOS 550D. Or if it does, Google is intentionally not telling me how to access it.

Page 69 of the English Manual:

If you press the shutter button halfway during manual focusing, the AF point
achieving focus flashes in red briefly, the beeper sounds, and the focus
confirmation light <o> in the viewfinder will light.

Heh, so it does. Thanks for the help. Like, all of it. This thread wouldn't be the same without you.

Edit: Actually it doesn't seem to work with my FD lenses. Must require a chip in the lens or something that EF lenses have that FD ones don't. I did find something else though, Magic Lantern custom firmware. It has some neat manual focus assistance as well as a lot of other helpful tools.

Used a flashgun and experimented today. Most of these were taken in dark rooms. Quite like some of the results. Messed around with Black and White and some Lightroom developing as well.

Reposted from the camera thread:

A few of the shots taken with my 60D while away for new year. Excuse the horrible watermarking..lively hood/business blah blah and all that.

Taken on burst mode, ive got about 50 more of this at various points on the track.

Cheers :D Was you posting about using ambient light in conjunction with flash that made me give flash another shot. Even if it was a flashgun as opposed to a on-camera flash.

Got round to processing some photos I took just after new year, got up early to catch the sunrise. Had to shoot in JPEG, so my post-processing was pretty limited.

Is that a folded up piece of A4 I see reflected in your eye?

Works quite well, though. I've been wondering how to light eyes for macro without creating catchlights. I'm guessing you need a huge light source, like a wall bounce or something. That filter is nice and sharp, too.
