Tom Watson mentioned that his own name had been found on seized materials. Was his phone also hacked?

Almost every member of the committee grilling Murdoch has been followed or hacked by NotW/News Corp.-hired people, as part of the corporation's relentless hunt for dirt to use to discredit them all and get the Murdochs off the hook.

British tabloids were called "infantile" and "pitiless" by that one woman who was talking this morning. Pretty fair assessment, I'd say.

They should be treated with the same dignity which they treat their victims.

Slimeball Paul McMullan is at the Leveson inquiry right now. Here's some select quotes...

"Privacy is for pedos, no one else needs it."

[Going through people's rubbish] "gives you such a good starting point"

"I loved giving chase to celebrities, it was great...how many jobs involve car chases?"

He said he was "only" on £60,000 a year as NOTW dep. features editor. So he claimed £15k-20k in expenses to top it up

He thinks he is "entirely responsible" for the reopening of the investigation into NOTW and its subsequent closure.

It's scary and brilliant

4.22pm: McMullan says he regrets the stories he did on Jennifer Elliott, the daughter of actor Denholm Elliott.

She became a drug user and started begging following the death of her father and the News of the World exposed this.

I really regret it because I'd got to know her very well and I really quite liked her. The fact she was begging outside Chalk Farm station came from a police officer, who had been surprised when he asked her to move on.

I went too far on that story. Someone crying out for help, not crying out for a News of the World reporter.

I then took her back to her flat and took a load of pictures of her topless.

Then she went on TV and described me as her boyfriend.

This girl killed herself shortly after he ran an article "exposing" her begging.

Paul McMullan is doing more to discredit and rubbish the practices of tabloids by defending them then Hugh Grant ever could opposing them

Think about possible reasons for that. :(

I despise McMullan with every fibre of my being.

They should have delayed today's hearing as it's clashed with the chancellor's statement and so isn't getting the coverage it deserves.

Quote:
The Guardian journalist who revealed the scale of the phone-hacking saga has told the UK inquiry into press standards that it was News of the World journalists who listened to and deleted Milly Dowler's voicemail messages, not the private investigator who worked for the paper.

SoK - spot on. This has been far and away the best day so far. McMullan's stuff is simply staggering. Worst human being in Britain right now? Possibly - and that's saying a LOT.

He spoke of his own experiences an awful lot. No way are all tabloid journalists as bad as him but some are. Tabloid journalists as a group don't have to be as bad as him to warrant press reform however, which I'm all for.

Oh my God, this is just bullshit.

Quote:
McMullan finishes his evidence by explaining he does not think the hacking of Milly Dowler's phone was malicious.

"The hacking of Milly Dowler's phone was not a bad thing for a well-meaning journalist to do."

He explains what he means by telling Leveson his child went missing recently from his back garden for 20 minutes and he "felt the emotion that Mrs Dowler felt when her own child went missing".
