Metroid Prime 2: Echoes is still my favourite game of all time.

Yoshi or Roy were my usual choices on Melee, too bad Yoshi was nerfed big time on Brawl :(

I'm somewhat perplexed by this comment. What about it do you prefer to Prime, and why?

Mostly the fact that I managed to finish it when with Prime I never got round to it :P

Other than that I think the boss battles on Echoes just edged the original Prime (in my opinion anyway); except the Boost Guardian, who was an absolute bitch. In reality though not much differentiates the two, but Echoes was always my favourite of the two.

Sorry it's not a very good explanation, I can't really think of exact reasons other than sentimental ones!

I can't explain how much I enjoyed my N64 but GC was just a hugely disappointing follow-up. Months went by when there were no decent releases and the sequels to games I loved on the N64 were all let-downs.

The GC showed what it was capable of with magnificent games like RE4, but for me it will be remembered as the machine that hosted some disappointing sequels and the crappiest controller since the Jaguar pad. I thought the new 'franchises' Nintendo introduced were woeful and the console was alienated by decent third party support. The GC was capable of so much more, but it was like no one could be strawberry floating bothered with it.

Months went by without any decent releases? And yet you loved the N64?

The GC in its first year of life was nowhere near as woeful as the N64. Christ, that was depressing, whereas there was only a little blip in the GC's software releases between the launch window (which was solid, but not spectacular) and Smash Bros. Then, in the space of about four months, we got Mario Sunshine, Wind Waker and Metroid Prime. All pretty much in the first year/14 months of the console's life.

And the controller was pretty much perfect, bar the slightly small C-stick, but then, that was only really a problem with FPS games.

One thing you may have a point with, is the "inferior" sequels, as some are arguably weaker than their N64 predecessors. Common consensus is that Mario 64 and Ocarina are better than their respective GC brothers, but a lot of the other examples are borderline and debatable. I'd put Blue Storm down as better than the original Wave Race, Thousand Year Door better than Paper Mario 64 and Melee beats the first Smash Bros. hands down.

What it lacked, maybe, was a strong Acclaim and Rare line-up to keep third parties ticking over. Even though developers like Capcom had a quality line-up, a lot of it came in the second half of the Cube's life.

As a console to revist today though, the Cube wins outright. A lot of the N64 titles suffer from "early 3D syndrome" or dated game design (sign posting and "helping" the player being one area) whereas a lot of the Cube's best games still stand up today.

i can forgive the "inferior" sequels for the simple fact the Gamecube got two Metroid games which are easily in the top ten games of that generation.

much better than metriod on the N64, oh wait...

What didn't you like about the GC pad? It's far more ergonomic than the PS pad and the analogue stick is of a much higher standard.

The only issue I ever had with the GC pad was the slightly small d-pad. Other than that it's possibly my favourite pad - I love the shoulder buttons and the giant A-button. I know people who complained the whole pad was too small for their hands, and the C-stick was a bit 'flicky'.

Yeah the C-stick was a bit naff. If it was intended for each direction to essentially be a 'button', then why make it a stick?

Because using buttons would mean making the controller bigger.

I agree with Steve's first sentence. There's only a few GC games that I truly loved, whereas the N64 had tonnes.

But I have to admit, the controller is second only to the 360 pad. It was fantastic and it made the N64 pad look like a pile of gooseberry fool.

The C stick isn't great and the triggers are poor, also the Z button should have been underneath.

I liked the dual action of the triggers - analogue travel, then a Boolean click.

Playing around with the menu screen on Wave Race justified the purchase for me. Super Monkey Ball 1 & 2 also delivered many hijinx and showed just how great the analogue stick was compared to its rivals efforts. The downside for me was never ever managing to find a memory card, official or 3rd party, that didn't corrupt and lose data as some point in time.

Oh yes, Luigi's Mansion. I remember everybody bemoaning a lack of a Mario game at launch and thinking that LM was just a cobbled together launch job. I think time has shown what a great game it actually is.
