Hi,

You've probably clicked on this thread (specifically this opening page) because you're somewhat curious about comics. Oh, you're not? Movie thread is on the first page.

*waves*

Okay, so where was I? Comics! Comics are awesome.

You may have come here after watching the latest Marvel/D.C blockbuster and now you're interested in the character and want to know what to read next. Ask away!

You may have come in here curious about some superhero who died, an event lauded by the mainstream press every.single.time (this happens a lot by the way) and be looking to see what all the fuss is about.

You may have come here because you like that Walking Dead show and you want to know more about the comic or even if there's other comics out there that don't have capes and tights in them.

Comics are often put across as a very niche, underground kind of fandom, daunting even. This thread is here to counter that notion and foster awesome, good natured conversation about the medium and all the genres it encompasses.

Don't be afraid to ask!

Are Hush 1 and 2 any good? They're like £8 together on amazon.

I've got a bunch of comics to get through. The World War Hulk paperback and about issues 1-16 of U.S. War Machine.

They're not bad. They'd be quite good for "newbies", but the central mystery is a little dull. Pretty art and fights, but you might suffer for not knowing some of the characters/elements...and they aren't introduced well. (e.g. I had no idea who Howard was...so that scene made no sense :D)

It's also "mainstream", so not very dark for a Batman story.

(DrDoom didn't even get the "The" right :()

TBF most Batman comics are mainstream. The only ones that aren't really are Arkham and maybe Killing Joke.

I should be getting Watchmen any time now. I know I could have downloaded it, but I want to go through it myself, at my own pace, and away from the PC. From what I've heard, it's an absolute epic.

No. Not really. The recent Detective Comics run, Batman, Joker's Asylum, hell even "Robin" have all had pretty mature stories.

Hush had nothing beyond (very) pretty action, and there was nothing overly "adult" about the story.

I'd also like to point out i'm currently selling a whole stack of comics. Some are on ebay atm (mostly Iron Man stuff) but most of the stuff won't be going up just yet. There's a list of the stuff below i'm selling and will be replacing with the TPB version. Not really keen on splitting them to much (ie I'd rather keep arcs together etc) but may be willing for the right offers.

http://shop.ebay.co.uk/merchant/mark84a ... omZQQ_mdoZ

I'll probably add more stuff later, aswell as list everything in the trading folder.

Can you recommend me a good Batman graphic novel? I've read Long Halloween and Dark Victory and am looking for something similar. A good number of pages.

Just because they are mature does not mean they aren't mainstream. They are published by DC and use a character that is on lunchboxes. It doesn't matter how edgy they seem, there are still limits to what you can do with the character. Batman has and always will be mainstream.

Well. You've started with the best. 8-)

Give Hush a go. It's well worth a punt at £8 for the whole thing. It's a **little** bit shorter than LH/DV, and as I said the mystery isn't anywhere near the standard of those two.

It was aimed as a mainstream marketing push to attract new(ish) readers, so it's fairly...you know.

I will purchase it shortly. Is The Dark Knight Returns any good? I saw it in HMV the other day.

Oh you haven't read Year One?

Go for that one then.

Hush is ok. "Batman&The Monster Men" and "Batman & The Mad Monk" are also near the origin. So fit in nicely with the others you've got.

I personally can't stand TDKR.

Year One or TDKR.

Either.

I'd get TDKR, it's only £7.99 on Play.com (or at least it was). It's not as long as Long Halloween, as it's only 4 issues, but it's well worth it.

I liked the first arc (with Riddler) but as Gotham Knights became "Hush Knights" it got really really gooseberry fool.

And then they didn't even end it!
