Does anyone know when the next hardcover collection (Vol.4) of the Walking dead is out? It's a much better read doing it in 12 issue batches and I really want the next one without going to the singles or the smaller trades...

And on another note, is anyone around here reading Mark Millar's 1985? I'm up to issue 3 at the moment and it's a very interesting read, exploring what would happen if Marvel characters (Secret Wars era) were to find a way into our "proper" world. It is taking slightly too long to build up to something considering it's supposed to be a 6-issue series, and would probably do better from lengthening it somewhat. Still, it's a nice alternative take on your everyday underwear-as-outerwear story. Anyone else got any opinions on it?

Middle of October for the Walking Dead Hardcover IIRC.

Re:1985 I haven't been reading it though apparently it ties in somehow with his current Wolverine Arc (and maybe his FF run, not sure). I heard that there's a common thread Villain wise behind it all.

I remember first reading about 1985 and it was originally pitched as a fumetti comic.

Some from last week

Angel - After the Fall #11

Ow.

That had to hurt.

A very good issue of this series. The new art, while not perfect, is much better. It also focuses on the "core" cast, without requiring you to have read previous comics to know who people are.

I'm also glad they shide away from the "predictable" ending...

Astonishing X-men #26

I'm actually gonna copy a bit from another review, which perfectly explains why I like this...

Quote:
One of Ellis’ greatest gifts is his ability to change voice on a dime, a necessity for anyone that tackles a team book, at least a team as diverse as the X-Men. As much as I loved Joss Whedon’s run (aside form the hellacious delays), his writing style bathed each character in varying degrees of snark. Sarcasm has its place in this world (shockingly says the guy from Joisey), but it can become grating when each team member’s sole goal is to “bring the funny”. Not everyone in the world is funny, sarcastic or has the ability to bandy about quips with the rapidity of Chinese Olympic ping-pong players.

By being able to let go of his ego and slide into the skin of each X-Men team member, Ellis makes even the most boring of archetypes, like the stoic team leader Scott Summers, intriguing without sacrificing his true personality. Many writers need to rely on shattering the status quo with Summers to make him interesting, like Morrison’s quarter-life crisis version, but Ellis squeezes out gorgeous characterization by letting Cyc (and frankly all of the team) just revel in being themselves.

Secret Invasion - Inhumans #1

Secret War seemingly ruins up the long set up. It started in Quicksilver: Son of M (or whatever it was called)...continued in Silent War (which I loved)...and petters out due to the requirements of a company wide cross over. Lovely.

That bad taste ruined this issue for me...

It was nice to see the follow up to something that happened...ooo....5-6 months ago? (Nice work Marvel!).

Generally we get a repeat of "Who do you trust" with the Inhumans turning on each other.

I don't get the end...why is BB still alive..and what's to stop him talking?

Secret Invasion #5

Still not overtly quick with its pace. I always enjoy reading Bendis' dialogue though. And the last page was cool.

Captain Britain #4

Best thing to come out of SI. This issue was no different. Poor John though! The ending sets up some interesting directions for the series to go in. Can't wait.

Re: CB#4

John doesn't revert to Skrull form like every other Skrull on death.

Poor drawing/editting, or hint he's still alive?

Galaxy Quest #1

(Yes that Galaxy Quest).

It doesn't work without the actors - nice try, but missing that "something" from the screen.

It also fails on one level - The Galaxy Quest film was about the actors realising what they do mattered, about them going from unhappy with their lifes, to living and loving their lifes.

In this...they know this. They don't seem to have an "arc". So it's just a few jokes tied together.

Depends what you're into? Superheroes, crime, romance, westerns, slice of life?

FP runs a pretty good subscription service. If you're looking for trades then Amazon, Forbidden Planet (again) and Waterstones are quite reliable.

Crime there's

Scalped
Kind of like Sopranos if it was set on an Indian reservation. It follows Dashiell Bad Horse as he returns to his reservation after fifteen years of absence. He finds it has become a den of corruption and crime.

Criminal
The series' story arcs are self-contained and focus on different characters, but these central characters inhabit the same world, frequent the same bar, and share a common history of two generations of crime. The best book Marvel is probably putting out.

100 Bullets
The initial plot of 100 Bullets hinges on the question of whether people would take the chance to get away with revenge. Occasionally in a given story arc, the mysterious Agent Graves approaches someone who has been the victim of a terrible wrong, and gives them the chance to set things right in the form of a nondescript attaché case containing a handgun, 100 bullets, a photograph of a person, and irrefutable evidence that this person is primarily responsible for their woes. He informs the candidate that the bullets are completely untraceable: any police investigation that uncovers one of them will stop.

Losers

Not really crime but a really good blend of espionage and action. A team of Special ops soldiers goes about ripping off the CIA after they are double crossed by them in Afghanistan.

Superheroes there's so many (comics is saturated with them unfortunately).

Ones I like right now are

Captain America
Manhunter
JSA
The Initiative
Invincible

Best getting it in trades. It ends with issue #100 (oddly enough) I think it's on something like 91 now.

They were going to do a game of it a few years back. No idea what became of it.

Buy the trades of Paul Dinis recent Batman stuff if you can. The first one is called Detective and the second is Death in the City. The Joker/Robin issue makes it worth it by itself.

The good thing about them too is that most of the stories are standalone so you don't need an extensive knowledge of the character. He has a new interesting take on The Riddler too in his run.
