A bizarre statement from me. I've just spent £1.5k on the excellent Sony VAIO VGN-Z11WN/B laptop but the I.T. enthusiast (geek) in me what's to have a play with something different as it would be nice to have a break from Windows every so often.

So I've been looking at the new MacBook.

I know strawberry float all about Mac's as I've never owned one and hardly ever used them. Are they easy to use? Will it take long to pick everything up? What are the negatives about owning one? More importnantly, does anyone have one of the new models? I don't intend on using it for work, purely home use every now and then (yeah, it's just going to be an expensive toy basically and I don't have any interest in the Pro model as that's overkill).

If this turns into a Windows vs Mac slanging match, bones will be broken!

Honestly, you won't regret it. They're so so easy to pick up. Very intuitive and the new unibody enclosure thing looks really solidly built.

I suggest you go to the Apple Store or somewhere that has the MacBook so you can try the OS for yourself. Spend a while trying to do things on it that you would if you owned it, also, try do things like you would on a pc that are different, like copying and pasting, drag and dropping, also, installing a program.

I don't like using the mac, it seems to take me longer to do things and i've always had an issue organizing my files using the copy and paste system.

Try it first, that will help you decide a lot better than this thread.

And secondly, in what way is it restrictive? I've never understood why people say that.
I've always been able to do exactly what I want with it.
I think that impression comes from how Apple like to keep a close eye on what their products can do, but for me that equates to a more solid OS.

It wouldn't be an Apple product thread without FE commenting on how strawberry floating rubbish it is though.

To be honest, I always thought they were gash but had 10 mins playing with a Mac Air (or whatever its called) and really enjoyed the UI. It just seemed a refreshing change from Windows.

Suffice to say, Macs are overpriced and the OS is restrictive, in my experiance at least.

All computer equipment is overpriced. But the way I see it, strawberry floating around with a Mac and mastering it is something that I'd like to do and something I can whack down on the CV....

What makes the MacBook overpriced?
Personally I don't mind paying for a well designed, physically solid laptop with an intuitive OS, a suite of fantastic software and great aesthetics.

I'd be happy to show you through some of the functions of Mac OSX Steve. Honestly though, I think you'll pick it up easily.

Why do all Mac owners talk as if they work at the Apple Store?

As a macbook and PC owner, i can honestly say that no, you dont want a macbook. Going from a windows based laptop to a mac is like stepping about 10 years into the past. Seriously. Save your money. With the cash youd spend on a macbook, you could buy/build a kickass gaming PC. With a macbook, youll be able to do 'fun stuff', as the adverts say, like itunes, or some other ****** gooseberry fool.

They're as overpriced as any competing product in the £700-£1200 price range.

If you don't know what you're doing, the OS may feel restrictive. I reckon Steve's the sort of guy who might catch on quickly, and, like with anything, once you know how it all works, it suddenly opens up a lot more.

I could tell you now that I enabled the PHP binary and compiled a copy of MySQL from the command line so I could start designing websites again. Obviously we're not talking about trying to do things on a V-Tech computer with huge plastic animals for buttons, so if you think the OS is restrictive you really don't know the ins and outs of it.

I don't say that just because it's OS X (because that's the basis of your reply, FE, I know it), it's just common sense.

On topic, it'd be easier to just buy one and then ask what you can do after. I think it was St Nick who did this and we all had a lot of help to offer.

To be honest, it makes no difference to me or anyone else if you buy a mac or not.
As someone said earlier, play around with one, if you like it, go for it. But I think you've already made your mind up.

You could do the same job in Windows with less than half the effort and never needing to go to a command line.
