The iPad could potentially revolutionise print, but for that to happen about 25% of people in the world would have to own one. It's not going to revolutionise anything else. It seems to me that it's great to simply faff about with. For when you're bored and can't be arsed doing anything particularly strenuous. Ideal for lazy web-browsing, movie-watching or quick-fix gaming.

I don't think 25% of people in the world own a television.

You know what I mean, obviously it's a made up stat, there's no need to LOL about it like a knob.

If iPad eventually sells as well as the iPhone and publishers actually pull their finger out then I imagine it will have quite a large impact on print.

Publishers are already gearing up towards releasing stuff on iPad. There was an impressive vid over on Wired about how their mag would work on the format.

Wasn't that built using Adobes AIR platform though which Apple have effectively blocked with the iPhone 4.0 OS?

I just wish DC would hurry up and sort out whatever the hell their digital offering will be.

What I don't understand is how is it going to revolutionise anything without the standard ports?

Your at a friends you take your iPad you show them your holiday pics they hold out their Flash drive/SD card to show you their pics.

You CANT view them without syncing with a PC/Mac first.

I just don't see why on earth they left out 2 of the most standard connections in the world SD and USB surely should have been a must on an object costing 400$

Where is the use of it if you are unable to save something from it on the fly.

Business or home users will have this issue i suppose people will skip the issues for now, i suppose at the moment after seeing Wii, its going to be Wii mark 2 used for 6-9 months by some then ditched and the hardcore apple fans will continue, and only pulled out for the odd occasion.

You CAN do this. You need to buy the $29 iPad Camera Connection Kit:

 That is just such strawberry floating typical Apple. Right down to the "Camera Connection Kit" name.

No, it's "basic feature you blatantly should of included instead of finding an excuse for ripping people off. Again."

Apple've sold themselves as the Gucci of electronics, the Armani of computing but many people are left cold by their swish "style before function" mentality and rather patronising marketing and product spotlight videos. Somehow however, this has led to a breed of person who will defend Apple to the hilt as if they were personal relations. Many people see their products as lifestyle choices rather than consumables and will ignore the most absolute of evidence to defend their beloved parent company and Big Daddy Jobs. You need look no further than some of the posts in this thread to see that.

I'm not begrudging people who buy an iPad because it's a neat little gadget, I am however sick of people claiming it's the future of computing and the saviour of the web.

I didn't missunderstand, I just think their image goes hand in hand with their marketing. Like you say, Apple have quite deliberately cultivated a strong fanbase who feel they must have everything they make. It seems to work for them too, so all it really shows is that Apple have a bloody good PR department.

My main point though was that, frankly, who cares? I don't think I've ever based my purchasing decisions on a company's corporate image, on a conscious level at least.

Sure you can. Just buy the SD card adapter.

Don't be ridiculous. Why do that when you can charge silly amounts of money for an SD card adapter? ;)

If I remember rightly, Apple were one of the first companies to release a digital camera in the early nineties. At that time, of course, the wider technological and societal needs for such a tech were not substantial, so it failed miserably. However, one thing that was (un)surprising was that Apple designed the camera to download pictures to computers via a serial cable. Of course, soon enough almost all of their computers did not come with serial ports.

They are, frankly, gooseberry fools.

Well we differ there then, and frankly, I think a lot of people have the opposing opinion to you. My initial reply was to correct massimo claiming the only reason people hated on Apple was because of their success. I see the dislike coming from their Gucci image. I'l give them this; they've split consumer opinion. The fact that you subscribe to neither side shows you as something of a rarity.

It's beyond stupid, plug that in 1 slip of the iPad and you ben off the SD adapter breaking the only connector that can charge and transfer data.

Plus i really can't wait for someone here to get one of these then battery go completely dead, interesting system apple have of replacing it. You get a new iPad each time.

I suppose though the reason they left the standard stuff off is simply they can add both to iPad 1.01 and charge more?

Meh wonder if these issues will actually stop it selling millions

Surely that's a good thing? I mean, it's a bit rubbish that you have to pay Apple to replace it and ship it away, but I don't how getting a brand new iPad out of it is a bad thing.

No one said it would be a new iPad. Most likely they will build a stockpile of those which have had batteries replaced and send you one of those for quick turnaround. The battery in yours will be replaced, but it will most likely be sent to someone else.

Well, they haven't released any info for the UK... But I'm guessing it won't be limited to Apple stores. If that is the case then I will consider buying one from PC World and pay extra for insurance in case it breaks, and it will...two years later when I need a free upgrade!

It would at least be a refurb though, like the iPhones Apple stores give out as replacements. If you had a small crack in the casing or something, and didn't bother to get it fixed, you'd still get a crackless, shiny replacement for the sake of a battery. :)
