Publishers are already gearing up towards releasing stuff on iPad. There was an impressive vid over on Wired about how their mag would work on the format.

What I don't understand is how is it going to revolutionise anything without the standard ports?

Your at a friends you take your iPad you show them your holiday pics they hold out their Flash drive/SD card to show you their pics.

You CANT view them without syncing with a PC/Mac first.

I just don't see why on earth they left out 2 of the most standard connections in the world SD and USB surely should have been a must on an object costing 400$

You seem to have misunderstood my point: I'm not saying people dislike Apple because they exaggerate the capabilities of their products, I'm saying they dislike Apple because of the corporate image they project. As much as Microsoft/Sony talk the talk, never have they had the tenacity to call their products "magical." Apple've sold themselves as the Gucci of electronics, the Armani of computing but many people are left cold by their swish "style before function" mentality and rather patronising marketing and product spotlight videos. Somehow however, this has led to a breed of person who will defend Apple to the hilt as if they were personal relations. Many people see their products as lifestyle choices rather than consumables and will ignore the most absolute of evidence to defend their beloved parent company and Big Daddy Jobs. You need look no further than some of the posts in this thread to see that.

I'm not begrudging people who buy an iPad because it's a neat little gadget, I am however sick of people claiming it's the future of computing and the saviour of the web.

I didn't missunderstand[, I just think their image goes hand in hand with their marketing. Like you say, Apple have quite deliberately cultivated a strong fanbase who feel they must have everything they make. It seems to work for them too, so all it really shows is that Apple have a bloody good PR department.

My main point though was that, frankly, who cares? I don't think I've ever based my purchasing decisions on a company's corporate image, on a conscious level at least.

Surely that's a good thing? I mean, it's a bit rubbish that you have to pay Apple to replace it and ship it away, but I don't how getting a brand new iPad out of it is a bad thing.

No one said it would be a new iPad. Most likely they will build a stockpile of those which have had batteries replaced and send you one of those for quick turnaround. The battery in yours will be replaced, but it will most likely be sent to someone else.
