It's just about the same. Uploaders are prosecuted because they make the files available in the first place, so it makes more sense to try and take out the prolific ones. If they aimed for the downloaders, it wouldn't make all that much of a difference.

The fine is a punitive measure to make her pay for the fact she was probably so thick she left the downloaded game in her 'share' file and over the course of the next few weeks literally hundreds of people helped themselves.

I'm not allowed to discuss it on the 'Cade (against the rules), but 1st rule of filesharing: don't share. That's how they'll get you.

You have to share, when torrenting. It's how it works.

*whisper* You don't have to leave the share in the share folder when it's done downloading. See what I did there? Now, I really cannot say any more in case Steve sees me...

Sharing isn't a requirement when you torrent, although some apps do force you to allow/increase uploads in order to download quicker.

The best example is like the police dealing with illegal drugs. Take out the dealers (the supply) and the customers (the demand) will go too. Take out the uploaders, stop the downloaders. Same idea.

£16k! You would be far better off shoplifting the game as you would probably only get a caution if you get caught (assuming your criminal record is clean).

The punishment seems disproportionate to the crime, if you ask me.

Clearly the courts were looking to make an example of her.

It's true, but then don't they always try to do that for things that, ultimately, can never be policed efficiently?
