I'm not talking about the relatively minor stress of missing your alarm in the morning and then having to skip a shower and make it to work on time for a big meeting.

Nor the stress of being a single mother bringing up three kids on a wage of government handouts.

I'm talking about the stress that my boss has been diagnosed with, which has led to him having six weeks off work. I don't know anything about this sort of stress: does it manifest itself physically in your body, in that you are physically unable to attend work? Is it to do with prolonged tiredness, aching, headaches etc?

I'm just curious.

It's been quite stressful over the past six weeks, as my boss's deputy, covering all of his work. I must admit that. But I feel fine. I'm a bit stressed - but I'm not suffering from stress. Make sense?

Its basically when they get put under so much pressure from the upper reaches of management that they think they can't cope anymore

When in fact its them being crap at their jobs and taking the easy way out and landing everyone in the gooseberry fool

I'm crap with stress. On the surface I'm fine, and I to all intents feel fine but subconsciously it's there. When one of my family was seriously ill several years back, I developed extremely bad eczema. There were bits of it on my face, arms and chest, but the worst was on my left wrist, were I kept scratching so much there was a massive patch of it which got infected.

I also reckon stress helped make me very ill last year.

Stress can cause all kinds of symptoms, some cope better than others.
He probably bottled it up and had a breakdown.

It depends on loads of things. Stuff festering away could be an issue that once he felt down everything came to the surface and wiped him out. Sometimes you can be fine but then have a real off day where you feel ill and everything is crashing down around you.

We all deal with things slightly differently so what may effect one may not effect another.

Think I've been stressed recently, been having chest, and back pains and a pressure behind my nose, going to see the doctor to talk about it.

Agree 100%. I've known a few people who've taken time off with 'stress'. Each one has been a lazy, useless, devious banana split.

My boss isn't lazy or devious or anything like that. I feel sorry for him. He's in his late fifties and works very hard, and he's confided in me several times over the past few years that he doesn't feel up to the job.

If and when he finally retires I will probably get his job, but I have a suspicion there's only one or two thousand extra quid in it and all the extra responsibility won't be worth taking on.

So he's just gooseberry fool at his job? Maybe he should find a new one.

No, he's good at his job but has low self-esteem and doesn't think he's good at it.

I worked with someone who was signed off work for nearly 4 months with 'stress'. I had two full time jobs for that period and was really happy about the situation.

Especially as this guy managed to play golf nearly every day of that 4 months :x

possibly the worst sport to play when suffering from stress i'd guess.

Possibly the most infuriating sport one can play.
