Why haven't they killed Symbian yet? I thought Nokia were going all in with Windows?

They are, I think the only reason they used Symbian is because the censor needed bespoke software which they couldn't do with windows. Symbian was easier and quicker. They've pretty much ditched Symbian. I don't think they actually expect to sell any of these.

The whole thing is just a tech demo no one is going to buy this phone! I'm much more interested in seeing this sort of tech being implemented in a WP really hopefully it wont take long

So just a question why does everyone hate Symbian? Is it just the lack of apps?

There are far better mobile operating systems out there, and no one wants to invest in an ecosystem with no future. I'm not sure if it was Symbian or not, but the Nokia/Intel Meego collaboration looked good. Too little too late though.

If this is cheap I might pick one up.

EDIT: £465 probably not would get one for £200.

Slow, buggy, unsupported, slow to be updated, essentially dead.

More megapixels is worthless if the lens and sensor are still mobile phone fare.

You're also going to get horrendous noise performance.

This is just a number they can slap on there for those who don't know what they're talking about.

Have you looked at the pictures supposedly taken with the camera? Admittedly at the original 41MP resolution at 100% zoom it looks quite poor, but after oversampling it down to 8 or 5MP (which is what the camera does by default anyway, that's the reason it has all those megapixels) the pictures actually look quite nice. And the oversampling actually means the noise performance is improved.

Just out of curiosity what do you mean buggy? I've never run into any problems with my phone, but it's the first smart phone I've ever owned. The only problem that I've ever encountered really is insufficient memory when browsing web pages.

I think he's referring to the apps on the store not the phone itself.

Ah ok, yeah the apps seem to be lacking on the store, it seems like there's more stuff just out on the net in general, although mine uses the older Symbain S60. But the phone itself seems to do everything I want it to right out of the box.

At any rate I would definitely buy this, although $450+ if quite steep for a phone that doesn't even have buttons. :x

Quick question, is there a way to just buy a phone by itself in Europe without signing up to a contract? Here you can't buy a phone from a store, you always have to buy a plan with it, and if you want a pay as you go phone then you're stuck with a selection of about 3 phones that Alexander Graham Bell would have thought were outdated.

So I bought one of these and it arrived yesterday, I am completely in love with it. I know it can't compare to Android or Apple devices when it comes to the Apps but it has supports apps built with web run time so I can actually build my own :D They won't be as good as other ones but they'll be mine. Also the quality of the photos, and videos it takes is unbelievable, even in low light.

My only complaint is the lack of physical buttons, if I had that this would truly be the perfect phone for me.

Here's a photo of a pulled pork sandwich I took last night...

^That's just using the most basic auto setting as well.

I also recorded a video as we went to some bar and saw a band play, it was deafening in there but the audio on the phone came out amazingly well. I'll try and get some better photo's and put them up in the photography thread in the next little while.

Is that a low light shot. It looks much better than the average phone picture.

Hasn't convinced me to buy the phone either, but it's definitely made me want to get a pulled pork sandwich!

Megapixels don't mean gooseberry fool when it comes to the quality of photos. You could have a 200mp camera and the sensor is still gooseberry fool (which this one will be) even 12mp is enough together with a nice sized sensor and a quality lens.

This is just a gimmick to sucker people into buying it, thinking they have some omg 41mp amazing camera when in reality it still has a meh lens that you can't change and a mobile phone sized sensor. Really stupid basically -if you want a good camera, buy a camera.

I'd even say 6-8mpx is still good on some older cameras.

Yup taken in a pub, so quite low light.

I honestly don't understand why people think it's an inferior OS, I know that it's app store is quite barren but other than that it is truly fantastic. The only down side for some people I can think of it is its complexity, but for me personally that's a huge bonus.

Honestly now I'm not trying to be a fan boy but can you guys give me some reasons why it's not as good? My experience with other OS's is limited but just from some quick comparisons between my old phone (Nokia E73) to my friends phones, one has Windows Phone 7 (Not sure what phone exactly I just know it's a Samsung), and the other has a Samsung Galaxy SII so Android, mine always seemed to come out in a lot of areas. My mail actually gets downloaded to my phone so I can access it even when offline (I remember my friend with the SII said this was not the case for her), my maps are built into my phone so when driving I never need to worry about roaming charges, and my battery life was better than either of their phones as the OS is so miserly.

The only bad thing was the browser :dread: But considering the phone was originally released in 2009 it's hard to fault it for not being super modern in that respect.

Your right they don't matter it's what you do with them, the phone uses oversampling to combine several pixels into one. The result is super clear images even in low light as each 5MP photo is actually made from a 41MP photo. Also the lens is Carl Zeiss so not the standard crappy cell phone lens.

But you're right I'm sure it's not as good as some dedicated DSLR but those things are 1) expensive and 2) bulky, this thing probably takes better photo's then my Cannon Elph point and shoot and saves me the trouble of carrying around two things.

Edit: I also recorded a video on it as my friend and I went to some bar that had a live band playing after the sandwich and I'm uploading that now as well. The music was deafening as it was a small place but it comes out great on the phone. I remember reading that the phone can record sound up to 140Db clearly and it does it in stereo as well. Once it finishes processing on Youtube I'll post it here as well.
