The UK prison system is...

Home arrest and curfews with tags and locks installed for all non violent criminals. Deprivation if liberty should be the aim, why put them in with hardened criminals to do that?

Hmmm.... You want some alternatives to prison... Something less barbaric. Something that acts as a deterent to someone contemplating commiting the crime and also as a suitable punishment if you do commit the crime.

So ideally you want to create within the criminal some form of empathy with their victim, so that they realise that their actions are bad.

Our prisons are pathetic. We lock people up for all sorts of crimes, with differing sentences for the same offences, and let people out before their full sentence is served.

The prisoners get choices of meals at each meal time, access to gyms, PlayStations, TVs, phonecalls, lessons in loads of different subjects, and warm, dry accommodation. There are elderly people and hard-working people in society who don't have it as good as that.

Where's the deterrent?

Depending on the severity of the crime, we should look at 'treating' people and convincing them to turn away from crime, not shack them up in a prison and just wait for them to re-offend.
