About 30 seconds in. Not really sure that attitude is going to encourage them into work, tbh.

Why doesn't he just defect to the Tory party and get it over with?

I don't think he realises. The problem isn't laziness , it's lack of jobs, and uni being 9k a strawberry floating year.

2 million unemployed. 0.5 million job vacancies.

Do the maths, Clegg!

That's a big figure, but once you've wittled out the people who can't be employed, or are simply unemployed on benefits, but don't actually want to work, I'm sure it falls to something far less dramatic.

There's also the idea of attitudes. Why should these kids with no jobs, no qualifications and no hope have to be forced into making their lives better at the cost of losing their benefits. Surely if they want to be employed they'd try off their own backs. If you get rejected from jobs for being underqualified, you need to make yourself more suitable. Voluntary work might not sound fantastic but it really is one of the ways to differentiate yourself from other 'NEET' teens. It shouldn't take an ultimatum to get the work ethic required. There's plenty of ways to enhance yourself, that simply aren't being taken advantage of.

Tell that to the people of Hull. 80 people chasing every job vacancy going, there.

I'm of the opinion if you really want a job you can get one. It's apathy, not just in the present but in the past which hold people back.

Yes but if everyone sends off 20+ applications...

And if everyone does that and only 1 in 80 gets a job by doing that?

It would at least make the royal mail happy as they actually make money on short distance post like job applications.

I'm in two minds about this as while I do think some kids are taking advantage of the situation to claim they can't find a job while not looking I have a feeling the number is pretty small.

Say there's 200 people who each send off 25 jobs applications to 50 jobs. That would mean 5000 jobs applications for 50 jobs. So 100 applicants per job which is the headline figure, even though we can see that there is one job available per 4 people.

I'm fully aware of that, but I'm making a different point. People know the competition. That's not the problem. The problem is the fact that people know this problem, but do nothing aside from moan about it, when they should be doing their best to make sure that they're better than the other 79 people applying for the same job.

I know someone will point out 'what if every person maximised potential and applied for jobs' Yes, it would still suck that there would not be enough to go round granted, but at least the quality of the workforce of the UK will be better. Doing stuff other than complaining is good for your mental health, keeps you active and still gives you a chance to contribute to society. And if people are given better training, skills, education and be supported in bettering themselves, you can guarantee some of those people will end up self employed, or starting a business of their own, therefore creating more jobs and opportunities. Infact, the job of supporting people in training, voluntary work and bettering themselves creates more jobs by giving people the responsibility of helping others. It's a case of finding money to run such projects which is what Mr Clegg and co is putting forward. It'll be an investment for now that will be repaid when people are better trained, more businesses are being opened and the recession subsides enough to increase workforce numbers in current businesses and public sectors.
