I saw a bit whilst on a coach. Didn't seem to hold my attention at all. Someone said it was The Goonies for the modern age? I despair for the modern age if that's the case.

Please all go and see John Carter. The company I work for spent nearly 3 years working on all the creatures and other effects and it looks awesome.

I've heard the film is shite.

Majority of reviews have been favourable even the high brow papers.

When I saw John Carter was made by Disney I was surprised Dwayne Johnson wasn't cast in the lead. It seemed very much his thing.

Never watched the Goonies. Super 8 is good if you liked Cloverfield. I did. Don't think it's quite as good as Cloverfield, though, it doesn't have quite as good a concept behind it

What? If I start watching a film for half an hour am I supposed to pretend I like it? Is that what established critics such as yourself do?

It's not at all. Its not a brainless action story at all. It won't please everyone that's for sure.

The brief synopsis on IMDB intrigues me. I always like the whole "ancient mysterious civilization from a distant planet" thing.

That's the thing with special effects. There are films where the effects are good or you can at least tell that a lot of work has gone into them, and I always feel for the effects staff when the actual film turns out to be crap because of a gooseberry fool story, screenplay, actors, etc. I ask myself what do those people do in those cases? Do they go and lynch the director for wasting their work like that? Commit hara-kiri? Change jobs?

I'm not being cynical. That's all they can do. Once the work is finished, that's it. There's no time to rest on your laurels (or lament a failure) in the entertainment industry. Financial security and future employment opportunities demand it.

no it's true. It's a job, there is a brief period of mourning as you have invested so much time and effort but that soon departs and you move on to the next project. Even if the film is crap or bombs if the work is good that's what matters in our part of the film making process and gets us more work.

Is this the film you're talking about Archaeon?

It's called 'The Raid: Redemption'.

It's out on the 18th May, looks so good :D
