Hullo all!

I'm a novice player of Warhammer 40k at the moment (Space Marines of course, For the emperor!) and am also looking into starting up a Warhammer Fantasy army after playing a quick game in my local store and purchasing the (immense) rulebook. However, I'm kind of torn with which army to choose, so I was hoping for some suggestions/opinions on which is your favourite army and why, and why you think it might be suitable for me.
When I play fantasy computer games I tend to lean towards characters/classes that are more magic oriented (Warlocks, Mages and the like) or characters that are a kind of mixture between magic and melee (Such as Paladins) so that's the kind of army I'd be kind of leaning towards. I'm also quite a fan of big cool looking monsters

So far I have ruled out a few though. Namely the Tomb Kings (I don't want an army of boring looking skeletons) and Vampire Counts (again, most of the units seem to be skeletons).
I'm also not a huge fan of Skaven or Lizardmen, but might be swayed if someone can make a good argument for them, heh.

I'm an AD&D fan not Warhammer but I'd go with an undead super army. They may be a bit stupid but they get the job done.

Wood Elves perform badly in 8E WFB. The laser guided cannons have made large monsters a liability too.
If you want Magic and Knights Id say High Elves or Empire. Empire tend to be more 'massed and cheap' with some good elites whereas High Elves lean more towards the 'Elite but expensive' side. HE some of the best mages in the game though. Of course if you just want cool models roll as Lizardmen!

If you don't already frequent a wargames forum, Ive been a member of warseer.com for years. They have a massive community across GW, Privateer etc. There is a general negative vibe there towards GW (Zounds, the prices!) but if you ask for tactical advice someone will bite.
