So I'm running a blu ray rip through my PS3, trouble is the sound is reversed in my PS3. Tried another rip and that is fine, is it a case that the person who made the rip is a bit of an idiot or is it a trouble I can fix my end?

Is it an .mkv?

It could be that the video has multiple languages for audio and the PS3 is playing the 1st one by default which could be russian etc...

It's fixable if so! You'll need a program called... mkv merge, you can remove the parts you don't want then create a new file. It will save storage space too

Reading that back, I didn't explain the story properly there

When I say it's reversed I mean on my 5.1. Where speaking should be on the front speakers is now at the back and the surround sound is coming from the front.

It is an .MKV file but like I say it's only this one rip

Right. My mate has just sold me his surround sound system for next to nothing. 7 speakers all going through an ancient Cd player/receiver. The speakers are fine but the receiver is inadequate so I'm going to need a new one. And so here I am for recommendations.

I'm a newcomer to this so I'm not looking for the best amp in the world. This one caught my eye straight away:

It's 7.1, it's Sony, it's quite cheap. My only worry is the output strength: 100W per speaker. These are quality speakers, the front two especially are 3ft tall freestanding jobbies. Is 100w going to be enough? Is that underpowered or will it do?

Does the old cd/dvd/amp unit have any ratings on it for what kind of Watts it chucks out? What about the speakers?

At least one of them should have a label.

For a 7.1 I'd imagine 100watts would be plenty. With the sub it'll be around 1000 watts total which is normal.

I like how there's a GUI interface for setting up YAMJ on Windows, but for OSX you've gotta faff about in the command line thing. Sort of flies in the face of the whole "Oh Mac's are easier" argument

Discovered that a load of TV shows I ripped myself back in the day don't work on the Popcorn Hour, as there's something slightly incompatible with them. The sound loads up, but all I get is a black screen. Luckily it's only a few files that do it, so I can just rip them again (or just download them for ease...)

If i download a blu ray rip or a blu ray quality torrent, is it worth it if i'm going to watch it on my laptop? Or should i just download an hd rip. My laptop doesn't have a blu ray player or anything like that.

You don't need a Blu-ray player to watch a Blu-ray rip. You do however need a decent graphics card.

However, a blu-ray laptop would at least guarantee you have sufficient power to decode said blu-ray rip.

Download a 720p file and you should be fine. I wouldn't bother with a 1080p file.

Another quick question: are there any amps/AV receivers that anyone knows that will stream video to your TV via USB? As in, I plug an external HDD into it and it'll play video. Some of the Onkyo ones have USB ports but they're audio only...

Cheaper laptops tend to have a 1366x768 resolution on which you won't be able to see the full benefit of a 1080p resolution, so you'd wind up with a file that is a fucktonne bigger, more work to decode, and you wouldn't be able to see many benefits even after all that anyway.

Argh, that Mac the Ripper doesn't seem to be Lion compatible How many bloody programs am I going to find that just don't work anymore?

Anyone know of a decent free/cracked alternative? I just want to rip the .isos straight off so I can stick them into Handbrake or whatever.

Woah, just discovered you can plug the 360's HD-DVD drive into your computer and rip things with it, apparently. I'm currently ripping Batman Begins using MakeMKV, which should just rip the important bits into one simple .mkv file. I'll report back once it's done. I hope it works...

Anyone know of a decent program to convert DTS audio within an MKV to AC3 audio? Currently trying to get HD rips to work with both the PS3 upstairs and GoFlex TV player downstairs.
