Granted, the flash memory would probably push the cost up, but a slower cheaper processor could probably compensate for that. The thing is, if you're buying a budget smartphone, you're probably not expecting something that's going to run at a decent clip, but a lack of storage space is a killer on Android no matter what your expectations.

slower processor isn't an option., most are around the 800mhz mark any slower and they would be unusable.

they are at a point where that's the best they can do for the money, if you want more storage pay more....

I'm fine, personally. My Galaxy S has 8gigs, and life is sweet.

The poor tablet I have, however, has only 512MB and dear god, it's like night and day. It's not even the speed which is the issue (the viewpad 7 is only clocked at 600mhz  ) but it's not the speed I find myself butting heads with on a regular basis, it is literally the space requirements.

I filled up the 16GB on my S2 in months. Thankfully a second 16GB Micro SD keeps me happy.

It's all music with some photos and videos though. For apps and other stuff like that you don't really need much. As long as its expandable.

I don't think Android apps need to be explicitly rewritten to take advantage of tablet hardware, do they?

yeah but they are totaly different level phones

ok the S is old now but it was a top range phone when it came out. which in itself shows the level of progression.

the wildfire is entry level and always has been so the two really shouldn't be compared

it may not be much time between them but they are different generations

The S was an iPhone 4 level sort of smartphone with a similar pricetag, and it still stands up reasonably well.

I've got a Galaxy S2 being delivered tomorrow.

I used to love my HTC Diamond phone a few years back, but then 'upgraded' to another HTC phone which I didn't like and the screen broke. Since then I've been on a cheap nokia so it should be quite a jump from that to the S2.

Yes I know you won't get an oled screen on a wildfire but its screen is still ass. Dim and you can pretty much see each pixel on it.

The reason you can see each pixel is because it has large pixels: The Wildfire - indeed, many low-end smartphones - have a relatively low resolution screen - a mere 320x240. To put it in perspective, this is the same as an Amiga's low resolution mode (though, usually with a significantly higher bit-depth). It's yet another area where low-priced phones will be compromised.

I got my Galaxy S2 this afternoon and had a very quick play with it after charging for a couple of hours. I'm really impressed so far, as previous phones I used have had quite unresponsive touch screens which put me off the technology, but this one works a treat. It's all fairly intuitive and easy to use and so I've already setup wifi, bookmarked some useful websites and linked my email. The screen looks incredible and the camera also takes very good photos which is handy as I don't have a decent camera, just a FlipHD which I won from a can of coke (but that only takes videos. not stills).

So very happy with it so far. Now I'm going to investigate what apps I should install. (I hear there is a new Pokerstars app. :shifty: )

Unlocked the bootloader and rooted my Galaxy Nexus last night so I could install a custom ROM. Should have been simple, but it somehow got stuck in the boot animation and wasn't loading past that :fp: Managed to somehow fix it eventually somehow.

New ROM is pretty good. It's bast on the latest build of ICS (4.0.4) which hasn't been officially released yet and it has some alterations such as landscape support for the launcher and faster landscape switching.

Just upgraded my Asus Transformer to ICS - I'm liking the improvements so far and I'm hoping it'll stop me lusting after the Prime for a while

Thinking about a trade in at CeX and getting a SII... minor thing, but how will the hardware buttons and the soft buttons of ICS work together?

The battery for my GSII has gone to absolute gooseberry fool recently. What is the best battery app around? I uninstalled Juice Defender because it became a little bloated and unresponsive. Easy Battery Saver forced on my data network for some reason, so I never really replaced it.

My battery has messed up lately too, had to charge it twice yesterday. The phone has been going really slow at times too, I have to turn it off and back on to get it working quicker.

I have ics on my galaxy 2. It just works the same as normal, there are no soft buttons. Hold down home for the task switcher. Id prefer a double press for the switcher. Does anyone know if you can set it up to work off a double press?

Anyone got any experience with the asus transformer or prime? I won an iPad 2 but find the os too limiting, and I don't really like how the keyboard or text boxes work, things like that. I much prefer my desire s. it just seems like a supremely deliberately retarded device basically. I don't see the point of the home screens without widgets.

Safari is really fast though.

I want to sell it to get a transformer prime, only thing I'm concerned about is range of apps available.

I have a Transformer Prime. I love it but the range of tablet optimised apps is currently quite limited (depending what sort of apps you want). Things are improving but some patience may be required.

I can't abide the limitations of iOS either, however, so for me it's a price I'm willing to pay. The device itself is really well made and does feel like a premium bit of kit.
