Trying to pick movies where the choice isn't particularly obvious.

I think, just for the extra dose of narrative coherence, the film just edges it for me. It gets all of the atmosphere and doesn't get quite as bogged down in the narrative quirkiness of the book, and dat ending. :datass:

You?

Film is miles better than the book. The ending of the film was much improved, and the whole Tyler Durden/narrator reveal was handled much better.

I voted for the film because it's better than the book by simple elimination. :datass:

I'll cancel my vote in case Rubix gets angry. EDIT: Can't change it, oh well.

How do you know the film is better when you haven't read the book?

Or where you joking about that :shifty:

Movie all the way.

Chuck Palahniuk is an atrocious writer. Anyone ever read his Haunted book? He's so strawberry floating pretentious to the point that I can't bear to read his waffle! I can't stand him. Every single chapter of Haunted, I could almost hear him jizzing in his pants over his own writing. He's so self indulgent. The Fight Club film is so much better than the book and is one of my all time favourite films. I saw the film first and was severely disappointed with the book.

The atmosphere and story telling of the film is nigh on perfect and the ending is actually good.

I loved Haunted, it's one of my favourite books.

Pretentious is definitely not what I'd call his style. Don't get me wrong, I can understand why people might not like his style, but I just wouldn't call it pretentious. If anything it's the exact opposite; just unflinchingly unsubtle and direct about anything.

Fight Club always struck a better tone in the film.

Would love to see a good Survivor movie. I felt the movie Choke was a real let-down as I thought it was one of Chuck's better books.

I like his writing, but his tropes and mechanics become more and more obvious with the more of his books you read. The last one I really remember enjoying was Rant.

I liked Rant too, but I think that was the first time I remember thinking 'I've pretty much read this already' given how similar it was in tropes and themes to previous books.

Snuff was a bit of a let down for me, because I think what made Survivor (which is probably my second favourite after Haunted) so interesting was the way it subverted normality with all the little Palahniuk-y asides (like all the throwaway comments about cleaning) that pick at all the little things bubbling under 'normal life'. With Snuff, it was already exploring the porn industry, so there was nothing really all that shocking for him to pick at under the surface because it's the strawberry floating porn industry.

I'd really like to read Pygmy next I think, as that definitely does have potential for picking around under the surface.
