I am going to get myself a new Road Bike and scrap my Hybrid thing, which has cost me £200 (for than the bike) in repairs.

Being a lanky git I need a bike with a 58.5cm frame so I think I'm going for a Giant Defy 2 at £800. http://www.giant-bicycles.com/en-GB/bik ... 861/38959/

Thing is, it's a lot of dosh for something I know nothing about. Does anyone else do this cycling thing? And who are Giant?

Mate, if you are going to buy a bike for that much dosh, go to a local bike shop and have it kitted out for your lanky frame especially.

Very true, make sure that frame is right for you by going to a shop. Then order it on-line.

Giant are a well trusted and decent brand, I wouldn't hesitate getting one of their bikes if it fitted well. I'm glad you've gone Road too, hybrids are okay, but are rubbish on roads compared to a proper road bike (and rubbish off-road compared to a mountain bike).

Seeing as you're spending a lot of money (I go round a slightly creaky - but well looked after - £300 road bike), it is worth brushing up on bike maintenance, lots of places reun afternoon courses, just so you know what every screw does. Obviously lots of stuff on the interweb.

Haha, sorry. Hybrids are great for people starting to cycle, wanting an upright position and they are theoretically a bit better suited to canal path type cycling which you wouldn't want to put a shiny road bike on... but if and when you get on a sleek, lightweight road bike and go zooming along at 35mph+, you'll see a hybrid doesn't excel in either road or off-road cycling.

I can't see me ever doing 35mph+ on a main road though

It's a bit scary the first few times, but easily done with a hybrid if you're on a hill and the wind isn't working against you.

Like a bike it's definitely worth going to a cycle shop and getting one properly fitted (then run away and order it on-line). A badly fitting helmet isn't much more use than no helmet... but I'm pretty sure most helmets are the same safety wise.

I want a road bike. The tyres on my mountain are literally 10cm wide, I hate pedalling along a road knowing I could be going about 3 times the speed. It weighs a tonne too.
