The wife wants to know if Bioshock Infinite is better than either of the previous two installments of Irrational Games' critically acclaimed series. I don't know what to tell her, as I've never played it, nor do I really trust Metacritic's critics or user reviews. I do trust you guys though, at least for now. How is it?

Gameplay is as good as Bioshock. Story is much better.

I've played 1 and 3, 1 was played for the first time ever a few weeks before 3 came out. 3 is the better game overall, though both are well worth playing.

3 has far better gameplay than 1, the guns actually do damage and you're not constantly scavenging for ammo. I like the colourful open-space environments more than the creepy confined Rapture, but that's because scary videogames scare me too easily compared to scary films. It's certainly got atmosphere to it!

The story is great in both of them, but I think I preferred 3 more.

Better than 2 most definitely (though admittedly I've not played the Minerva's Den DLC which I've been told is excellent). Probably on-par with 1 but a lot more story focused/driven than either of the previous 2.

She loved the undersea world and the creepiness of the first two games' underwater setting. I think one of the things she's most worried about is that its not going to feel like Bioshock at all without the creepy feel of the under-sea environment. Does the game being set high in the sky impact on that feeling?

It isn't as creepy, but if she loved the other two she will love infinity.

:dread:

The writing in Infinite barely comes close to the original Bioshock.

I disagree. Bioshock infinite stayed with me long after the credits finished whereas the first I played finished then forgot.

Infinite has a good ending.

The original Bioshock had a good everything but the ending.

Loved all three, but Memento Mori's post is pretty right how I feel about the series so far. Though for combat wise it'd be 3>1=2.

Either way, it's worth a playthrough. Enjoyed it through from start to end.
