I posted this in the PSP thread bit no one will probably notice it there.

Right, I have bought the Photofast Dual SD Adaptor thingmy as well as two 16GB SD cards (only one of which has arrived in the post today...fnnrgghh).

Apparently, I need to do some formatting witchcraft on my PC in order for the PSP to recognise them and then I need to do something else to make it recognise the two cards as one lot of 32GB. Can anyone tell me - in the simplest terms possible as I am an idiot when it comes to things like this - how to do this?

I presume just formatting them both on the PSP simply won't work?

EDIT - I tried to reformat the one I had in the adaptor but it didn't work. Apparently you need to reformat them on the PC... though how you do this, I have no idea.

Wait a minute...SD cards? PSP doesn't take SD cards.

That is what the adaptor is for. It is shaped like a Memory Card Pro and you squeeze two of these tiny SD cards on to it.

I just think you first need to format this in someway so the PSP reads it. It is possible, as everyone says this method is far cheaper than shelling out for a Memory Card Pro.

This way, I got a 32GB card for £25. A fiver for the adaptor and two 16GB SD cards at a tenner each.

Ah, gotcha. I was beginning to think you'd made a huge mistake.

From reading the instructions this is what you need to do:

  • connect the SD Micro card to your PC, go to My Computer, right click on the card, click on format and select "FAT32" for file system
  • repeat with the other SD Micro card
  • insert both SD Micro cards into the adaptor and insert that into the PSP
  • the PSP should give you an error message about the card - ignore it and reformat the adaptor in the PSP settings menu

How do I connect the SD cards to the PC though? Do I need to buy another adaptor?!

Or can I just access them by putting them in my PSP and tinkering with them in USB mode? I have a feeling I can't...

Not sure if USB mode will work, worth giving it a try though!

If you have a Poundland nearby you could buy an all-in-one USB card reader for your PC.

You can, that's the way to do it.

Follow systematics advice and it'll work perfectly.

Ah excellent, that will at least save me a trip to Poundland (or waiting a few days for one off Amazon).

Will give it a try when I get the second SD card in the post tomorrow.

Cheers guys!

Right, I tried that advice, but once I clicked "Format" a message comes up a few seconds later saying: "Windows is unable to complete the format". I have tried formatting them both separately (only having one in the adaptor) and both at the same time.

Any ideas?

EDIT - I bought the SD Cards directly from Amazon, so it's not like they're fakes off eBay.

Also, when I got to format the individual card, it says the capacity is only 14.6 GB and what do I set as the Allocation Unit Size or Volume Label?

Put both in the PSP and format them in the PSP. If you format them separately it wont work - it's like setting up RAID.

That doesn't work - either I get a message saying there is no memory stick inserted or I get the error code 80220087.

Download this:
https://www.sdcard.org/downloads/formatter_3/

Format each SD card individually (not in the PSP, use an adapter).
Use the same settings for each format.
Put them both into the adapter.
Format it in the PSP.
It should work.

a) Memory labels assume that 1000kb = 1Mb. This is incorrect: as far as the computer is concerned, 1028kb = 1Mb. Hence, the "useable" memory will be quite a bit less than what's on the box. It's a bit of a scam, but it's also industry standard.
b) Allocation Unit Size is how much memory you want formatted. Spoiler alert: you want all of it, so put 14.7Gb in the box and it should round down.
c) Volume Label is the name of the drive. For example "OS" or "Hard Drive" is the volume label common with laptops that ship with Windows 7. It should be fairly irrelevant what you put down there since it'll be overwritten by the PSP.

Probably, unless it came with an SD card adaptor. I assume you have an SD card reader already (if you don't, then you'll definitely need one).

I dont... the SD cards just came by themselves. Can someone link me to a SD reader? Why do I need one then, as all of the methods online seem to say.just format it with the PC through the PSP's USB mode?

Well, sometimes it doesn't always work.

Oh right, I was being dense and thinking reader and adaptor meant two different things.

The frustrating thing is that my PC recognises there is 29GB of memory there - so obviously the two 16gb micro cards and the adaptor works. But I can't seem to format them either on my PC of my PSP. I downloaded that program Also posted, but that formatted them and my PSP kept giving me the same message (granted, I dont have a reader yet so I formatted them through the PSP's USB mode and not individually).
