Best headphones I've ever bought cost me a fiver (Play.com sale) from Sony. The bass is tremendous...

(I've just looked on Play.com & they're now £21, so a bit of a bargain there then)

They are wank. You're paying way above the odds for the name of a rapper who hasn't put out an album in over a decade. They sound far too bassy, all the frequencies are smushed into one muddy puddle of noise, and they're about £200 more expensive than headphones of their quality should be.

Seriously. Go to HMV and listen to them. The HMV in Bath has three pairs of Beats, two Sennheisers, a pair of Marshalls, some Bose and some Denon, and the Senns were the best of the lot.

I think he's talking about the in ear ones which are only £40 more expensive than they should be.

The in ears are also awful though. I have had a pair of £10 Senns from HMV for about a year now and they are amazing. Crisp, bassy where they should be, and well rounded soundwise.

I use the Sennheiser CX500s. I used to have CX300s, the first pair broke, but that's because I was a fat clown and caught the cable on a door handle. Replaced them, then closed a door on one of the earbuds.

The build quality is superb for what is essentially two bits of plastic and metal, with rubber buds on the end, connected by a rubber and copper cable. If you're breaking them, you're doing something wrong. See the above.

In terms of sound quality, you can't fault them for the price. You don't get stupid gimmick wacko bass, its more controlled. The noise isolation from the buds is excellent, and means you won't be the banana split pounding out his anime songs from his iPod headphones on the peasant wagon.

Due to their relatively low resistance, they can run at lower volumes than most sets of headphones. This means you can turn the volume right up and give yourself tinnitus listening to your Learn Esperanto Podcasts.

Now that you have all that information, your options are as follows:

1. Listen to your uncles Stugene and Falsey. Buy a pair of reasonably priced, good quality earphones with a controlled low end, colourful mids and high frequencies that don't make you gooseberry fool yourself every time a snare hits. The CX300s are a fantastic set of earphones.

2. You are made of money and are currently sitting atop a nubile, Filipino hand servant, atop your mattress made from lion skulls. You buy a set of Shure SE315s. You are an idiot.

3. You do what everyone else on this forum does, and refuse to listen to well structured and reasoned arguments for good quality, decently priced products. Opting instead to finger your bum and buy some overpriced, over-hyped Beats.

Well I've done some research on your suggestions and I've narrowed it down to either the Sennheiser CX300 II or the RHA MA-350. From what I've read the quality you get for thirty quid is very good in both, and to be honest I don't want to splash too much money on a set of buds (or have someone spend too much as a present!).

As this is (hopefully) for Christmas, I've forwarded the info to my Dad and we will see what happens this time next week! Although, up until today the RHAs were out of stock on Amazon, so if he has already purchased anything it is likely to have been the Sennheisers.

Saying that, he's quite lazy and probably hasn't done anything yet.

Cheers for the advice fellas, will let you know the outcome! :)

I've got a pair of those, and they're total boss.

I'm no audio nut, but I know when my music sounds better in one set of headphones compared to another, and they sound great, especailly for the price. Nice bass, great noise isolation, all around probably one of the most satisfying pair of buds I've owned. I haven't managed to break them yet, either, which is an achievement.

I literally wouldn't pay 10% for them. And I'm not even being facetious.
