Its clear that ignition isnt an audiophile though is he, so why try and tell him something is gooseberry fool when they clearly arent and labelling everything else as gooseberry fool (skullcandy) just smacks of elitism. Just because they arent good enough for you clearly high tastes doesnt mean others wont enjoy them.

you're right, he won't understand or appreciate the frequency response and other geeky gooseberry fool like that, but in terms of money it's pointless.

And what if he has the money?

Same reason people spend ridiculous amounts on clothes when they could easily get the same thing for a lot less but buy it because ut looks nice/ like the brand?

i see what you mean with the clothes analogy, but.. if he has the money, they get something better surely? or get something shitter for cheaper, as it'll be just as gooseberry fool as dre beats or any other overpriced crappy product.

Im confused because apart from looking abysmal some of the skullcandy headphones are half decent. Im just bewildered at your quickness to label something as "gooseberry fool" when they are clearly not. gooseberry fool are apple headphones.

Abs dunno, maybe like most people they are attracted to nice looking things and the feeling of having a popular product. And if you'r a football fan, you'll know all about the beats headphones

Skullcandy are gooseberry fool, and they charge a premium for crappy paintjobs.

It is possible to get nice looking and high quality phones for the same price. Although, one has to question the wisdom of getting a 'good looking' set of phones when theyre in ear and strawberry floating no-one is going to be looking at them anyway.

I think we can chalk this up as a victory for the marketing department.

They are just monster ones with more bass added pretty much arent they? I know when the HTC sensation XE came out the reviews said the whole beats audio thing on it was just a EQ that had a load of bass on it. As for in ear headphone i have a pair of jay ones which are very nice fit well and have a tangle free cord on them plus only cost bout 20 quid! I may get the jay 2's or 3's in the future though.

Woah, this has become more heated than I anticipated!

Glowy's right, I'm far from being an audiophile. All I know is that my current Apple headphones are incredibily poor quality it terms of sound, bass and build quality.

Over the last year or so I've been wanting to get a better set that offers great sound, clarity and bass for a reasonable price. I've seen several topics pop up in ATF asking which headphones to buy, and whilst I've noticed Sennheiser has often been recommended, there have been as many people praising them as shunning them. The same can be seen in the reviews sections on sites such as Amazon. There is rarely a general positive consensus, and as a result I have not made a committment to buying anything.

My knowledge of the Beats headphones is pretty basic really. It's only after seeing so many people use them on the train and read about them in the paper that I have been made aware of their existence. I do not want them because they are 'cool' and, indeed, cannot really afford them - as I stated in the OP, I think its an outrageous price!

But, IF they were to be the be-all and end-all in headphone technology, £80 doesnt seem quite so bad for an investment in such quality, especially if I can find a cheaper deal on them.

I guess the question now should be what could I get instead that would meet my criteria at a much more reasonable price?

Id pay £80 for a stunning pair of buds, beats certainly are not stunning.

If I were you, Id look around the £30-40 mark and find a solid all rounder. You shouldnt really spend megabucks until you know what kind of sound you like.

Beats are absolute gooseberry fool. Do not buy them under any circumstances. If you want to look like "everyone on your commute" then murder them and wear their faces.

Stop being a child and buy these instead: Sennheiser CX 300. Just make sure you buy real ones. The reason they are reviewed so badly on amazon is because counterfeit versions are sold by marketplace sellers.

8-)

I've got a pair of the Sennheisers CX300B (there's a newer model now - the one in Stugenes post) - they're sturdier than they look. I'm constantly switching them between iPod, PSP and 3DS, in and out of jacket pockets and bags, taking them on holiday etc and they're still going strong. I got them from Amazon in January 2008 according to my orders page  happy nearly 4th Birthday, Headphones!

I've bought two (genuine) pairs of Sennheiser CX300s and they've both cut out in one channel after a few months. Beware.

If you're after in-ears I'd recommend these: http://www.amazon.co.uk/RHA-MA-350-Aluminum-Ear-Buds/dp/B0053R0WWG/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1324034224&sr=1-1

The market is flooded with fake Sennheisers, hence the poor build quality argument.
