You have tried restarting right? If it's doing it immediately at boot, you could try resetting your bios as thats helped me before with the same problem.

Take a look at your motherboard and there should be what looks like a watch battery, take that out switch your PC on, shut down, replace the battery and boot up again.

Sounds like it might be overheating or the fans are set wrong.

Check in the BIOS to see if theyre on auto speed or permanent max.

Could I get peoples opinions of the ATI HD 5770. How does it handle source games, css, hl2, portal things like that. I'm a little worried about my 4870X2 atm, hoping it was just a driver issue, but things have been playing up the last few days, graphic corruption on the desktop/startup etc. Just installed 11.2 drivers and it seem steady atm...could go funny anytime though so just seeing how it goes. Anyway the 5770 is in consideration due to it's price range.

Did you clean the fan in your GPU as well?

The 5770 would be a significant step down in performance according to these benchmarks: http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/172?vs=174

Am I better to xfire my HD4670 or go for a HD4870x2 with a view to crossfiring that in the future?

SLI/crossfire isn't a good upgrade strategy. Two SLI/crossfire cards of an older generation are typically outperformed by one card of the current generation. Save that money and buy a new card in 1-2 years.

Quadfire, at least for the HD4870x2, is a bad idea. Reviews seem to suggest it barely increased framerates and in some cases even made it worse

So the question then becomes, is Quadfire worth it? My answer to this is, "definitely not". At least not at 1920x1200, that is for sure. The only instances that Quadfire made any noticeable difference was in the synthetic benchmarks; actual gaming for the most part was unaffected by the second card, and in some cases actually performed worse.

That said, I'm using one and I've yet to play a game it doesn't handle with aplomb. GTA IV was, I think, generally just under 60fps @ 1680x1050 while running it's benchmark, and it's made mincemeat out of every Source game that I've tried.

Make sure you know what you're doing before mashing it all together.

If in doubt, ask. Lest you break something.

I haven't got much time to mess with it this week plus I haven't got a hdd yet (I bought a 4870x2 off ebay to go in it too) so I will be readin the instructions for now. The mother board looks like something off the surface of the Death Star and the water cooler frightens the strawberry float out of me.

I'll be asking plenty of questions alright. Might even document the build process to make sure it goes right.

Day 3:

I tried screwing the motherboard into the case today, if only I knew what lay ahead.

My oldest son, Leopald, wandered too close to the machine and it arced into his feeble body. RIP son.

I gave up my attempts to finish construction after it tried to claim the dog.

Im sleeping back in the bear carcass tonight, and tomorrow I try again. If not for me, then in memoriam for all who failed to make it this far.

Till then.. Adieu.

I need a bit of help. Lately I've fancied a higher spec PC. My current one is "decent" but can't handle games and often slows down, especially with a handful of windows open.

Whilst browsing I stumbled across an "all in one" pc. As in like an iMac. I wouldn't mind the space having one would save. What are peoples thoughts on these? If there is a problem with it, are they easy to open up or upgrade? Do they over heat easily as they are kinda like a laptop in a way.

I saw this one:

http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/Lenovo_I ... 05596.html

Not necessarily one I want, but just curious what these specs are like? With a voucher it's £539, but not sure if it's worth that. Ta.

They're ok for office/home use from what Ive seen. Dont expect any real gaming on it though.

Right. I opened up all the gubbins that I bought last night and immediately realised that things have moved on since I last bought a pc. Where I'd expect to see a 4" fan there is 6" inch and the case has capacity for 4 of them.
The water cooler needs to be fitted before the mono goes in and I'm worried to strawberry float the thing will leak. The PSU looks cool and even comes in a black velvet bag.

Didnt you get one of those all in one water coolers? If so, I wouldnt worry about leaking, just be careful.

Im sure you could mount the bracket before you put the board in and then screw the cooler down after its in the case.

Also, depending on how you mount the water rad, make sure all the air in your case moves one way. Eg, if the fan on the front of the case pulls in, then the fan on the back pushes out. Or vice versa. The last thing you want is two fans pulling or pushing or you'll just get trapped heat and poor ventilation.

I'm pretty sure you're meant to set up water cooling systems and let them run for about 24h one some newspaper to see if they've got any leaks, etc.
