I'm having some frustrating basic issues with my home pc and would appreciate some help. Yesterday whilst I was online and browsing (nowt dodgy, think I was on here actually) my wired connection just goes. Turns out I can't get an IP address for some reason. So I spent a fair few hours yesterday using my PS3 browser and google trying to fix it, mainly by setting up a static IP. This worked to some extent - I managed to connect to the local network but still couldn't get any access to the internet.

I've now run Avast, adaware and spybot as the main route of online articles was that they may be malware of some sort but still have the same issues. All wireless connections are working normally. I'm using the LAN port on my motherboard, could it be faulty?

For my static IP address, I was using a number similar to what my wireless connections are, just a different number on the end. Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0 and the Gateway as my router's address. Used the DNS as given on the Sky broadband website.

So, any advice appreciated as always.

Just try an IP outside of your routers DHCP range if it has that on. See if it works.

As in literally any combination of numbers? I noticed when I did ipconfig the ip address when using DHCP was out of the range of the router. For example my router is 192.168.0.1, whereas the ip it was trying to use began with 254.xxx etc. There was also no Default Gateway listed and ip/renew was a complete failure.

I also kicked the tower, which seemed to have little effect.

Everyones network is different, so it depends how you have it set.

For example, my dns is 10.10.10.2 and .1, the gateway is .254, the dhcp range is whatever is free with reserved addresses inside and then anything else is assigned manual addresses between .80 and .180 as required.

Thanks Falsey, but i'm making no progress. I've found my range to be 192.168.0.2 - 192.168.0.254 and i've tried many addresses inside and out of that range to no avail. All seem to be able to connect to some extent (although i can't access the router or the router doesn't acknowledge the connection either) but can't get online. Anything else i could try?

Give the router a full factory reboot if you arent going to lose any important settings.

CPU and RAM onto the mobo > Mobo into the case > GFX onto the mobo > PSU in > Connect it all up.

I cant comment on the electricity because I have no idea what is running in your house.

Nah, no good. Tried a new cable too and a different port on the router. Don't know if this may help but ipconfig/release seems to work but ipconfig/renew hangs for a bit then says "an error occured while renewing interface local area connection: unable to contact your dhcp server. Request has timed out.

I'm fairly sure there's no hardware fault anywhere, just some silly thing that's turned itself or summat.

I'll keep trying. :)

Does sound to me like a DHCP issue.

The router is assigning ip's to wireless devices no problem and the LAN port on the pc is only been used since January. The router is a similar age.

I'm trying a system restore now, then I think I have a spare wireless pci network card that I could try to see if that can grab an ip address. Should help finding out if the LAN port is faulty or not at least.

Thanks for your help.

My new laptop for uni arrived yesterday, link. Thing is a strawberry floating beast. Cannot recommend it enough.

It had a wee flakey last night after I installed like 20 programs and all the drivers. Wouldn't boot and said that one of the drivers had corrupted. Loaded it up in the system restore gooseberry fool and the last thing I installed was:

Steam.

PC Gaming is dead. Long live the console.

I restored it to just before I installed Steam, the restore taking most of the bloody night to complete, and then went about setting up the wireless and connection to my NASs.

I'm gonna run some tests tonight and see how it fares whilst gaming. CRYSIS ON MAX LADS HERE WE strawberry floatin GO.

Just had one delivered from ebay, plugged it in, all is back working again!

Guess it's possible the LAN port on the mobo is faulty but really dunno apart from that. Will just keep using this USB adapter I guess, has been assigned an ip address inline with the wireless devices and didn't require any fiddling with anything. Not bad for £2.50.

Thanks for your help.
