I'm pretty sure I've seen a completely different picture of the Sony Super Famicom somewhere.

Sega Neptune was released as the Sega Mega Drive 3. Not sure if the insides are the same but the design is exactly the same as the Neptune.

When was that supposed to come out? It looks just like a black Dreamcast.

Katana WAS the Dreamcast. The pic would have been a prototype, I assume.

Much like the Nintendo's AVS is just a NES. (Those pictures there are presumably from the abortive "pretend it's a computer" stage, hence the tape-deck and keyboard, both of which were peripherals that were actually released for the Japanese Famicom, I believe.)

There's often more than one prototype design.

And of course, there was also a unit that was designed to plug into the bottom of an existing SNES.

It was something similar to this, not sure if the thing in this pic is authentic or not, but I've seen that rainbow Playstation logo before...

That's the pic that was in EDGE magazine, so it's authentic enough for me.

Ah. So what was the difference between that and the Sony Super Famicom?

There was no Sony Super Famicom. The device was always known as Play Station, in both CD add-on and SNES-based console forms. From the looks of that above picture, the bit at the back was a flap covering a cartridge slot for SNES games. The SNES heritage is still evident in the product that was eventually release, mainly with the controller, which was a development of the SNES controller, with a connector that was clearly an expanded SNES controller connector, with an extra pin.

Blackbelt was the Sega America version of the Dreamcast, a totally different 3dfX based console, it was canned for the SEGA Japan designed machine.

Quote:
After a good 14 years or so of sitting on this, I've decided it's time to share a little bit of Sega lore with those who would appreciate it most.

First, a little background info -- I was introduced to this site by Monkfish (a great friend who recently passed away, RIP), who provided everyone with the Geist build, if memory serves. We worked together at Sega back in the day, and a bout of reminiscence over my old friend led me to remember this site, which leads us to today.

I'm here to reveal a piece of unreleased Sega hardware -- the Pluto. And no, it's not that Nomad wannabe -- it's a Saturn with a Netlink built in.

I remember following this in EDGE all those years ago and thinking it seemed quite cool. :fp:
It did get released in Japan, but never made it off their shores as it was fooking expensive and no-one bought them.

The Neptune was going to be a "standalone" version of the 32X. The Mega Drive 3 was probably a cost reduced Mega Drive with built in ROM cartridges.

The thing about that, and I don't if anybody will remember, is that before it was released PlayStation magazines used to refer to the PS1 as the PSX. I've got a feeling that Sony used to do the same.

The first Apple console the Pippin was featured a lot in EDGE. Another one that didn't make it to market.
