Later to the party and all that, but in a moment of boredom and the fact, my bedroom DIVX player was strawberry floated, I decided I'd dig the old XBOX out and mod it to run XBMC.

:wub:

Why didn't I do it years ago? Not only is it the best DVD/DIVX player I've ever had, but I've loaded it up with emulators and all sorts of other stuff. It's breathed new life into it.

The most under-rated console ever mainly due to what it can do when modded. It becomes a totally different console. I used to mod these out bigtime a few years back. Xenium chip, 200gb drive different dashes...

Great days.

Me too..

I have also re-discovered the Xbox. I had one soft-modded previously, but sold it, and bought a new one recently. Crystal version, chipped and with a really big hard-drive. It also starts directly into XBMC.

So now, one of my new hobbies is to buy cheap second-hand Xbox games (it's not like you can buy Xbox games at retail anymore) and install them to the Xbox. I have also bought component cables, and have activated NTSC/480p/720p (it's a PAL xbox originally). Not all, but many PAL Xbox games support this.

And I love it. Playing from the couch, loading and running games from the XBMC dashboard, without loading any discs. It's really, really nice.

Oooh fancy, I, unfortunately haven't got a mod chip or a big hard-drive so it's just XBMC and some emulators for me, which is good enough. I did however, use the completely free softmod trick, which any XBOX owner can do, providing they've got a PC and a few CDRs to hand.

Just looked at the price of 2nd hand XBOXs, you can pick them up in Game for a tenner, utter, utter bargain. Far more functional than any of my DVD players, and the 360 for playing media. It's a shame it's not powerful enough to decode proper HD files.

I'm pretty sure you can swap the internal hard drive for a bigger one in a softmodded Xbox too (there are many tutorials on the topic if yo u google it), but I believe it's somewhat of a hassle. Because, as I said, playing games from the large hard drive in my new Xbox is one hell of a difference. I don't even have to get uf from the sofa when switching games, as you can reboot the Xbox directly from the joypad.

And of course this also does wonders for games with long loading times, like Fable and Jade Empire :)

Another cool thing is that most NTSC games (and many PAL ones, in NTSC mode) support 480p. A surprising number of Xbox games also support 720p. A few good ones that do are:
* Soul Calibur II
* Scarface
* Total Overdose (I love that one)
* Dragon's Lair 3D
* Fifa Street 2
* Freedom Fighters
* The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction

I think I've got enough space for 1 game to be installed, how does one do it then?

Is it a matter of extracting the ISO into a subdirectory on the internal xbox hard-drive and then running an executable, or do I need to FTP some sort of launcher first?

I have my old Xbox just boxed up gathering dust and we need a DVD player at home. At the moment we are using the 360.

I am totally new to all this so whereabouts do I start DM?

As far as I know, there are two ways to do it. One way is from a PC. You can user the PC program Quix (Google it) on your PC, and FTP-ing over the games to the Xbox hard drive.

The other way is directly on your Xbox. You just install Dvd2Xbox on your Xbox. Then, you just run the app, insert the game you want to dump to the hard drive, and select where to dump it. That's the way I do it.

If you are going the PC route, there are other alternatives beside Quix.

My brother had a modded xbox in the car, we took a trip to blockbusters and waited in the car pack while he copied games to the hard drive then returned them a few minutes later. :lol:
