It seems a shame not to have this old girl resurrected here, so off you go and get your bestest games listed here. A reason why you think its the best might be nice...

Anyway, for me its Elite (obviously). Such depth, such simplicity, such fun. How such a quality product could be run on a 32k box is still beyond me. The genius of it for me is that there is no plot, no missions or back-story. You fly, you trade and you fight. Simply brilliant.

Super Mario World is my favourite retro game for all the obvious reasons.

I'll try and think of some more esoteric retro favourites as soon as my brain starts working.

Gunstar Heroes.

Classic game, can always go back to it for a blast every now and then. Genius co-op, gameplay is pure simplicity yet pure entertainment. I have fond memories of this game back when I was a child.

Nodes of Yesod. My fave game of all. The music still makes me smile.

I loved Nodes and Ark. It must be at least 21 years since I've played either. :?

Get on it! Althought the roms aren't in the public domain any more (It's been made for palmtops) but it's easy to get hold of.
Still got it in the loft (complete with Crash Smash sticker).

There ARE missions in Elite though, aren't there? The Disk version at least, though given that you've said 32k, I'm assuming that's not the version you're referring to.

I have to admit that the first version I ever played was Elite Plus on the Amiga. Pink Thargoids for the win!

Crash Bandicoot.

The Naughty Dog games were brilliant, but the original is definitely my favourite. I'd play it instead of any Mario game any day.

There were missions on both the Beeb and speccy versions. My point was that they weren't integral to the game.

Fair enough, and entirely true. But it made for a nice change of pace occasionally.

Important for that sense of "criminy, this universe is bigger than I thought it was".

This is why we can never be friends.

How retro can we go? Earthworm Jim and it's sequels stick out for me. I even loved the crap N64 version

This used to be my favourite game as a kid, the Amstrad CPC version of Green Beret. Complete with crap graphics and dodgy flick screen scrolling.

Streets of Rage II would be for longest playtime, along Legend of Zelda: OOT.

But I will have to say Super Mario 64. Best. Game. Ever. Still. For me, at least. SM64 DS can go away, though.
