Did anyone manage the wall jump to get to the top of the castle? I never could do it.

Nope, never knew you could.

I just learned about Toad's Tool, a level editor for the SM64 ROM.

Thought this was pretty neat:

Also, you can unlock the real Luigi with it, which I'm pretty sure is legit because it's the same exact model (skinny, smaller head than mario, and unmistakeable long gorilla arms) in several different videos.

It's legit, I've just done it myself.

Hours, nay days of my life spent attempting that feat.

I actually can't even remember if I succeeded. All the memories are of the trying.

Wait, I just remembered, I did manage it. Ha!

Woah

I saw in some videos some people have 121, 122, or even 124 stars. Is that because they tinker with the counter or are there actual stars that can were removed from the final version of the game and can be unlocked via TT64?

I don't know, I didn't look that deeply into it.

Looks like the Luigi thing is just stretching the Mario model and changing the textures, as his head turns funny when he takes his hat off. It's a feature built into TT64.

Perhaps you're watching videos of people playing Super Mario 64 DS. If they are using a DS in these videos then I reckon that is the case.

Oh so Nintendo never did include a Luigi after all. Bummer.

Best moment for me was probably the opening cutscene and the first glimpse of a 3D world. For some reason the camera sweeping under the bridge especially made me swoon. And Peach... actually talking!

Yeah it was special. There are so many stand out moments, but the major one was feeling like you were in an epic adventure. More or less all of the Worlds were amazing, some more so than others, but in general the consistency was just astounding. I might start a new save file on the Wii version. Part of me wishes I had kept hold of my Nintendo 64 as theres something special about the controller for a lot of the games.

No it's the one where there's this secret passage above a bookcase that you have to wall-kick to access. Then it leads to the balcony where there's a massive ghost.

It kills you in two hits and there's strawberry float all space to manoeuvre, so there's a big risk of falling off if you try the usual running nosedive technique. If you fall off, then at worse you lose loads of energy or die and at best, the boss is reset. That happened to me plenty of times. Even if you don't fall off, using the dive means it takes ages to get up, usually resulting in the ghost hitting you.

Also, sometimes, when obscured from view by the ghost, Mario would accidentally go back through the door, which would also reset the boss. But the most annoying thing is how the collision detection is off, so even when you're blatantly punching it, nothing happens. So desperately, you mash the button (because you can't just run away, as that will result in the ghost hitting you because he's gone opaque), which causes the 3-hit sequence, but it's futile because you know that as soon as the sequence ends, the ghost is going to kill you.

I finally did it the other night, after about 20 stressful attempts, then I turned it on the next day to discover that the emulator hadn't saved for some reason (despite making SURE to choose "Save And Continue"). But I thought that, as I'd done it once, the next time wouldn't be so bad - but I was wrong. After the 2nd failed attempt I felt my heart rate go through the roof and my hands started shaking but I carried on to no avail. After loads more attempts, I just lost my rag and smashed the pad. This was after punching myself in the thigh really hard and nearly breaking my laptop over my knee.

All in all, it reminded me why I stopped playing computer games in the first place. They really are bad for my health...

The best way to kill the ghosts is to face away, wait until they're right up your arse then do a back flip / ground pound combo. Never fails.

I agree with everyone saying the start was the best part. The first time I played it I spent ages just running around, jumping off of trees and triple jumping everywhere.

I also love evrything about the Big Boo's Mansion level.

Ghosts...don't...die! Heh, heh heh!
Can you get out of here ALIVE?

I saw this recently, thought this might be the place to share it;

I love the way they shriek then burst into laughter whenever the mushroom appears, it's very contagious

The first time I played it I took over an hour to realise how bob omb battlefield was accessed! :fp:

I spent a lot of time in the ghost garden at first. So many, many brilliant memories, like the snowmans slide, both times, the pyramid, walking up that hill to get thay red coin in bob omb battlefield, the tall tall mountain monkey and rolling log, the magic carpet, timing jumps into tick tock clock, lowering the water around the castle, the metal pool, invisible cap and its use in the ghost house and the jumping piano.

Ofcourse it does. The new levels don't feel right in the DS version and the lack of analogue stick makes it worse. Still one of my favourite DS games though as the original is my personal favourite game of all time. Nothing beats it, even zelda oot. It was the first game I really wanted to keep on playing and playing and getting every star and coin, as well as searching for every secret and glitch. Simply close to perfection and will never be beaten for it magic and level consistency and wonder. I also played it at an age where I had bags of free time, so I guess that helped giving me such vivid magical memories.
