The confirmation was provided after a source close Kotaku said development on the shooter hadn’t been “going well” after work was re-started in 2011.

“An earlier version of Doom 4 did not exhibit the quality and excitement that id and Bethesda intend to deliver and that Doom fans worldwide expect,” Bethesda’s marketing boss Pete Hines told Eurogamer. “As a result, id refocused its efforts on a new version of Doom 4 that promises to meet the very high expectations everyone has for this game and this franchise. When we’re ready to talk about the Doom 4 id is making, we will let folks know.”

Rage 2 has also been canned and the DLC plans for the original have been “downsized” – resulting in all id staff moving over to Doom 4.

While a release date has not been set for the shooter, it will likely be “done when it is done,” to quote John Carmack.

Well strawberry float, I was really looking forward to Rage's DLC, and Rage 2 as well. I got along with it so much better than Fallout 3 or Borderlands. :(

I know it's only Kotaku but if what they say about the game's development is true then it sounds like Doom 4 was shaping up in a bad way. At one point the focus was apparently on making loads of heavily scripted set-pieces and unsurprisingly thesedays, Call of Duty was banded around as providing some inspiration for the game. I get that some game's need to chance and move forward but they really shouldn't forget what made Doom stand out/be so popular.

Hopefully they've got the boot up the ass they needed and they can finally get things on track again. I'm wondering though, how many games that go through such bad and storied development stages end up being top quality games?

Bugger! I still maintain that Rage was the best singleplayer FPS of 2011 and it looked strawberry floating gorgeous! Yes the textures up close were a dodgy, but running at 1920x1080p or higher at a sold 60fps the overall look of the game was stunning! The Scorchers DLC was great too. I really needs a great conclusion though. It just ended too suddenly and I never did use the BFG! If they can include some new endgame DLC then I'll be happy enough.

Really? It was alright but the biggest problem I had with it was you never felt you were a part of the world. Because there was little or no interaction with your surroundings.

I refuse to believe that, they haven't made an exciting game since, hell since before Doom 3. I would go so far as to say they make the blandest games on the planet now, oh and please don't mention Bethesda, so overrated.

Oh it was very old school in it's mechanics and interaction (we are talking about iD here, although it was still their most ambitious title to date), but as far as having a sold single player campaign it was, for me, the best released that year.
Crysis 2? was an utter disappointment
Deus Ex? I don't regard as a FPS
MW3? (strawberry float that series)
BF3?
Homefront? Fack Orf!

This :x One of most refreshing FPS's I've played in yonks. So many varied locations, great weapons, good enemies, only let down my mediocre racing. Gutted there isn't going to be a sequel. Now all we're getting is another shitty Doom.

If it's true, shame about Rage 2. Really liked the setting and gunplay in the original. Had a lot of potential. Could have done with more variety in the missions and a proper ending for starters.

 @ all the Rage love.

It's a mediocre game and that's it. I can't believe we still have gooseberry fool games being championed.

We're not saying it's the best game ever. It had some good ideas and some people enjoyed it. Not you perhaps, but that doesn't automatically make it gooseberry fool. :fp:

Makes it 'gooseberry fool with good ideas' in my books.

It suffers from some of the worst consolitis I've ever seen. The least any game that has loot collection should have is a minimum of borderlands style inventory. I hated Bioshock for dumbing down the inventory as well, a maximum of three slots with random generated loot to collect from any enemy or item. Loot only consisting of money and ammo. Items are found on the way  I mean games like Zelda have always been that simple, but they implement it in a much more ingenious fashion. Dungeons are the explorables (is that a gaming word yet? I'm coining that), and each dungeon is crafted to give you puzzle, action and loot collection that adds to your repertoire of skills.

I love the idea about revisiting some of their past creations within their own game. To call it the best single player fps of 2011, I disagree, go on, get booty beleaguered. It's only my opinion, which I'm adding to equal out the bullshit opinions on 2011 single player FPS game. How far is this going to be stretched? The best 2011 single player FPS made by ID? I can live with that, but FPS of 2011? :fp:

New Vegas was 2011 FPS game of the year even though it had gooseberry fool shooting elements

Metroid Prime is another one, Retro had to can Raven Blade to get Prime finished and even then there was a period where people thought the game was going to bomb and the company go under.

No game with as many bugs as New Vegas can be a GOTY candidate.
