What surprised me was just how instrumental Atari were in the starting steps of the industry, and just how bad the crash of 83 was - and how it ruined that slice of the pie for north America for some years.

I'm a little surprised that so little mention is made of Apple, actually. They sprang from the fruitful loins of Atari too, and when the crash happened, there was a natural sideways move to home computing with people creating games in their homes.
