EA has Massive Effect on Charts Image

12/Mar/2012

EA are No1 again this week, but this time it is the return of the hotly anticipated ‘Mass Effect 3’ that claims the Top Spot, amassing more sales than the previous four No1s (SSX, Uncharted: Golden Abyss, UFC Undisputed 3 and Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning) making it by far the biggest No1 so far this year.

In fact Mass Effect 3 (which has been released on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC simultaneously for the first time) has outperformed the previous two iterations week 1 sales combined. This means that last week’s No1, ‘SSX’ (-49%), has slipped down a place to No2 followed by Capcom’s new release, ‘Street Fighter X Tekken’, at No3 which sees the two franchises going head to head for the first time (Namco will release their own version called Tekken X Street Fighter some point in the future). It’s EA again at No4 with ‘FIFA 12’ (-7%) bouncing back down to No4 with Nintendo’s ‘Mario Party 9’ (+8%) also down two places at No5.

The third and final new entry (and EA’s fourth title) in the Top 10 is the expansion pack ‘The Sims 3: Showtime’ debuting at No6 and Sega’s ‘Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games’ (-14%) is just behind at No7. Activision Blizzard’s ‘Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3’ (-23%) is down a place at No8, Ubisoft’s ‘Assassin’s Creed: Revelations’ (-15%) is staying firm at No9 and 505 Games’ ‘Zumba Fitness’ (-4%) sees a return to the Top 10 after a five week absence at No10. The only other new title to breach the Top 40 is Sony’s ‘Unit 13’ which has debuted at No15.

What will be interesting, with regards to game and the apparent lack of impact on sales figures, will be the following weeks.

People who buy online are aware and knowledgeable, they then get the best price online and preorder. There is a subset who then wait a while for various reasons. What about those who are unaware of release and may pop into game over the weekend with the missus, and pick up spur of the moment purchases? I reckon they only make up a small percentage but it has the potential to hurt EA in the next few weeks.

The number of times I see people in game and gamestation with a new game in their hands, marked at a silly price, and still buy it is pretty high.

Only info for the top 4 versions are supplied i.e 360, PS3, PC along with the 360 Collecters Edition. The other 5% will be from PS3 CE and PC CE.

They will probably go to HMV. I can see them taking up a lot of the slack.

That was actually the first thing I did when i found out Gamestation cancelled my order. It obviously doesn't represent all the HMV's but the one I went to, the manager dude was telling me how they'd received a lot of pre-orders and enquires about ME3 the day after Game announced they weren't stocking the game.

Hardly surprising PlayStation owners didn't take to the series, after all, the first game never came out on it. Can you imagine wanting to watch, say, The Twin Towers and Return Of The King without having seen Fellowship first?

If PC digital download numbers where taken into account, would that make up a significant percentage?

Not sure it is just that. I bought ME2 on the 360 but have never played the original.

We rarely get PC download numbers so no idea. Some time in the future EA or Bioware might reveal the % sold on PC Worldwide.

Looking at that platform split for me3, I wonder if vita has reduced the spending power of the ps fans. A lot will be the same buyers as ps3 games I'd think,

I think its still a hang over from Mass Effect not being a PS3 game, a lot of PS3 owners I know don't seem to know anything about Mass Effect.
