That kind of detail as standard (in game with everything else running) is where the next gen of consoles need to be.

I'm not so sure either. If they can't attain that standard then there's something seriously wrong.

They have the Witcher 2 running amazingly on the 360. I fail to see any reason why we can't expect this level of quality on next gen systems.

That looks great. I hope we see some of this in Crysis 3.

That ocean looks absolutely ridiculous. If the next gen of consoles are like this, I will gooseberry fool myself.

Aside from the stone walls looking very duff, I hold my belief that Sony and Microsoft will "pull a Wii" in the next generation: cheap consoles based around motion controls. If they follow that route, I sincerely doubt they will manage to be able to run those simulations, never mind 60FPS at 1080p.

Surely even if the new consoles are only half as good as some of the rumours are suggesting then it will be easily powerful enough to pull off these visuals? Given that the next generation will most likely see us into the next decade I can't see either Microsoft or Sony being happy making a machine that is already outclassed by PC visuals.

They've been doing it for at least 10 years already, so I can't see them having a problem with carrying on.

I think it's very plausible we might see that level of real-time clarity in PC gaming, going forward - it remains to be seen if the next (final?) gen of console hardware will be up for that kind of technical workload. But within two years or so, I'd expect high-end PC gaming rigs to be running games at this level. Interesting to see just how much progress is being made in visual acuity - as a champion of eye candy I'm all for it, and I'm only glad that companies like Epic and Crytek don't listen to those who claim visuals are 'not as important' as gameplay.

In my book visuals are easily at least one half of the gaming equation. And that's being conservative about their importance.
