Scary games then, I strawberry floatin' love them.
I can't actually remember the last time I played a really scary game. Alan Wake had some great moments, and a great Twin Peaks-esque vibe (though obviously not to the same degree that Deadly Premonitions did), but other than the (to steal a phrase from Yahtzee) 'Abloogywoogywoo' jump shocks of Dead Space 1, I couldn't remember the last time a game really got under my skin. However, following the breadcrumb trail of tidbits and links around YouTube and Reddit, I've found an absolutely fascinating and thriving community of indie and home developers making truly brilliant little horror games.
There's the obvious success stories like Penumbra, Amnesia and stuff, but there's also great little short titles like the recently released Slender (based on the Slenderman mythos), stuff like 'Which' and other stuff.
The thing that I really like is how they're really playing with gaming conventions, with stuff like Irisu Syndrome that totally strawberry floats with the gaming fourth wall whilst hiding behind a fairly nondescript puzzle game.
So, scary games? Love 'em? Hate 'em? Can't play 'em or can't get enough of them?
I'll update this post with everyone's suggestions.

Amnesia: The Dark Descent is the first games in years to actually really scare me. It's such a simple but atmospheric game and I also love the fact there isn't any combat in it. Everyone who hasn't played it should really check it out.
Hoping to get some good recommendations in this thread. Shall have to nab 'Anna' at some point.
If combatless atmosphere is your thing, try Slender! I tried it earlier and it scared the gooseberry fool out of me! It's got such an oppressive atmosphere, and you're so helpless. It's like how survival horror used to be before it armed you with rail guns and partners.

I was palying shadow of chernobyl on saturday and got gooseberry fool up good an proper doing the underground lab bit. Also playing Cryostasis which while now scary definitely has its moments. I saw a great trailer for a game recently thats set as being a child in a house at night called beyond sleep or sleep of dreams or some gooseberry fool i cant remember, but it looked damn scary
I'm going to agree with this, sometimes you just turn around and SSSSSsssssssssssss.
Back in the day Resident Evil 2 scared the gooseberry fool out of me, especially with all the Mr. X encounters and there was a bit where a previously cleared area had zombies burst through the boarded up windows.
That said, Nemesis creeped me out and the Crimson Heads didn't help matters in the remake. Got over it in the end though.
Wha??? Is there a Slenderman game?? How do I get my mits on it, assuming that it's any good?
It's great, it's available for free online. I don't know whether it's the beta of a larger title or just a standalone title, but it's ace. Just search for Slender game.
The idea is that you're in this fenced off woodland with sparsely populated landmarks (a small building, a truck, a tunnel etc) and 8 notes are randomly scattered across these landmarks at the start of the game. You then have to find them. I don't think Slenderman comes after you until youve found at least one note, but he gets progressively faster and more aggressive as you collect more notes, and by 5 notes you're strawberry floatin terrified!

Theyre making slenderman in source engine too so a better looking version should be out soon
