Sony has urged PlayStation 3 gamers to give its virtual world Home another chance.

"I hear all the time, 'I logged on when it first launched but there was nothing there' – but I urge people to go back on there," Home platform director Peter Edward told Develop.

"It's been two years. We were always very proud of what we had achieved for launch, but we're the first to admit it was basic back then.

"Two years down the line it has come on in leaps and bounds, is vibrant, full of cool content and great games to play. It's free – those who aren't going in there are really missing out. If you think Home is what it was two years ago, do yourself a favour and have another look, you won't be disappointed."

Home enjoys 17 million registered users, contains at least 236 games and maintains profitability through the sale of 7000 high-margin virtual items, but has suffered criticism from the press and gamers since its 2008 launch for an apparent lack of compelling content.

Edward, however, is convinced that is no longer the case, and described the typical Home user as very similar to the average PS3 gamer.

"They're not that different from the PS3 demographic," he said. "But we find the more engaged, more active users are on there. Almost 'the hardcore of the hardcore' – but there's also a broad skew to the demographic. So we have a slightly more female, and wider age group logging on as well. But the most active are the more average gamers, and they are the most receptive to the idea of spending money in Home.

"Amongst all those users, the average time spent on Home each time they log on is one hour, so they really are engaged – they're in there hoovering up content, talking to other users."

For me it boils down to 3 things. 1, I don't have enough room on my 60GB HDD, so I'm already out; 2, when I did last use Home, it was slow & cumbersome, & took an absolute age to download, with every single area needing to be stored & loaded on the HDD; & 3, when you do have time to turn the console on, you want to be doing something constructive on it - like playing a game or watching a film. Wandering around having mindless 'chat' with strangers, before stumbling across a relatively gooseberry fool game isn't my idea of fun.

It's actually a decent service with loads of content, both free and paid for. I play Sodium One a fair bit and can't wait for Sodium 2 which is due in March. It's meant to be very WipEout inspired. If I am online with my brother and cousins we party up and launch in and out of games from Home.

It's not slow anymore either, everything is very slick these days.

It's just not my cup of tea running around and sniffing virtual people's arses.

Did someone from here actually do that or did I dream it up?

I read OPM's Letter From Home every month, & they've done nothing to convince me it's worth re-visiting. Their column last month was about the practically useless SingStar space, accompanied by the (more than likely accurate) jokes about a woman they'd met being a 40 year old bloke.

I queued up for around 20 minutes before and gave up. That was before I spent 30 minutes trying to find the bowling area by walking in and out of places (and in turn downloading an update at every door)

It's something I log onto once every 6 months, think 'Yeah this is cool :), maybe I'll try it out some more later' and never go back to.

I admit, when Home first launched I spent three days checking it out and playing some chess then never touched it again.

I'm willing to give it a second chance.

Want people to buy/use your products?

Advertise them on TV like Nintendo do!

I want Sony to give gamers a better PSN. Instead of wasting resources on this waste of HDD space.

I tried home for about 10 minutes and I can't think why I would ever want to go back. Then again I don't see the appeal of second life so maybe I'm just old fashioned.
